I bought 10 show girl chicks this weekend! I got a GREAT deal on them, will post pics later today. We also made the mistake of stoping in at monroe farm and feed on the way home and left with... 1 pair of geese, 2 kaki cambles, 2 runners, 3 splash silkies and 6 polish! Then yesterday I went to pick up my new hatched babies from a friends and they all hatched 22 out of 23 eggs, I took home 17 and he kept 5! I havn't done a new total count yet but... I know I am offically crazy!!! Pics to come, off to the feed store for food.

So I am rethinking my outside pen for runner ducks. ( that I don't have yet but oh well, hopefully SOON!)

I have a raised strawberry bed that we constructed for every bird and squirrel in a 5 mile radius. I think we ate 5 berries in 7 years! So, I'm thinking of tearing it down and using that area for my pen.

Question 1.)

What is the best way to make it so critters can't dig under?
It will be gravel and dirt with pine shavings for the flooring. (maybe some strawberry plants too!)

Question 2.)

I have read all the post that say ducks can eat anything but is there anything here in WA that grows naturally that I should worry about?


I bought the cutest solar ducks that look like runners! I have them on the deck with all my bulb pots. Getting the hubby used to the idea of having ducks around! LOL!!! We named them Azul (glows blue) and Verde (glows green). Pathetic huh!'

I think that after reading the thread today I might have to break done and mow the lawn. It wouldn't quite so bad if I didn't have to first pick the dog poop from nine dogs.

I was going to plant my bareroot plants/trees today but just never did it. I haven't done much of anything today. First day with the kids back in school after spring break and I've just been playing facebook games. I kinda feel bad, but then again, it was kinda nice to not do anything

Now I'm going to head out to my coop and see how my chooks are doing

Some of you that have been on here for a month or more might have read from time to time my posts about my GSL that seem sick and hasn't layed an egg in 27 days now

she would just stand around all day, wouldn't free range with the rest of the girls. Well I felt so sorry for her that I took her to the vet this afternoon. After a hour in his office and $151.00 later I learned that she has an YEAST infection

He said she also had a general bacterial infection which was probably caused by the yeast infection. I have to give her two meds for a week. he said she should started laying in a week. said to be safe not to eat the eggs for ten days..

If ya need a good avian or exotic animal vet, this guy is on main street in Bothell. My daughter works at Petsmart and this is where they take all their animals. Sorry no dogs or cats

Another good avian vet is Eastside Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center in Kirkland. There is also All Animal and Bird clinic in Lake Stevens who treats chickens. He neutered my potbellied pig, and while I didn't care for him per se, his staff is nice. They also offer holistic care for animals... But I'm not going there.

Justbugged, I feel your pain! I picked up poop today from three big dogs (1 of which is a foster), two mediums (both fosters) and four smalls, oh, and the cat (who thinks she is a dog as she was raised by one and goes in the lawn). I dumped a few five gallon buckets of dog 'donations' on my non-food compost pile. Blorgh.

To all newbies, welcome. Join the fun! Runners are great fun. I wasn't going to keep mine when I got them. I obtained them when I purchased a few silkies that HAD to come with all the other birds owned by the lady, as she was moving. They are from good lines, Holderread and Golden Egg, and the whites are nice quality, and they really grow on you. They learned I am the source of all things food and gladly follow me wherever I let them follow. They share a fenced pasture with a trio of dewlap toulouse. They have a 4X4 house and the toulouse have a shed.

They aren't as upright now as they should be. It's breeding season, and I up their rations then, and they are getting a bit pudgy. I need to cut back on their chow. They are very cute, nice birds, and not as flighty as I expected.
