Jen- It was so nice to meet you. Thank you so much for all the info. Your son is soo cute! And so very Well manered and Behaved for a boy! Kudos for you. I look forward to joing the group with my girls they are excited and said that it would have been more fun if they would have shown so here we go, time to save all my PENNIES!

Different Jen. Who is the other Jen? I don't have a son, and I didn't know who was on BYC and was busy with the silkie exhibitors/the feather foot ladies all weekend. I did show a couple people around a bit, but I didn't know them beyond the fact that they looked lost and couldn't find the other building.

OMG - I don't know how you all do it! And what do you do with all those chicks? I felt like I was over my head with 14 duck eggs under broody(s) and even though only four hatched, I still feel stressed. Though after the Stevenson show I really want to get serious about some nice enclosures for multiple breeds. We've got one great chicken coop and a good sized run and I'm working on building a substantial duck house with nest boxes, but how does one REALLY DIVERSIFY??? AND house everyone?

If you want to be competitive, especially as you learn I recommend not diversifying. I have been offered some very nice birds that aren't of my chosen breeds and I turned them down as I need to have space for more than one breeding pen of all of the silkie colors I have. I did bring back some duck eggs from the raffle that I plan on hatching, but not keeping. I am trying to get some of the local kids into waterfowl, so the hatchlings will go there, and extras will be craigslisted or raised for meat.

Other than that I only brought home more of my breed of choice (silkies) more white runners to go with my white runner pair (golden egg and holderread bloodlines) and silkie/showgirl eggs.

You are better choosing a breed and start there. Stick with the silkies for now- you purchased a very nice buff hen from Marjorie Best and a wonderful blue rooster from me- both are SQ birds. If you saw the big blue silkie cock in the show, the one that got best of variety, the blue cockerel you took home is his son. He has great bloodlines. Save up and look for a blue, black, or splash hen of good quality at the October show, or a fall show in Monroe, and you'll be well on your way to raising some very nice silkies. You should join the ASBC (American Silkie Bantam Club) which has a very nice forum and great perks. I hope you show in the fall!​

Sorry for the confusion. As anyone with the name Jennifer knows, it being as common as it is (there were 5 in my class throughout elementary school) you learn to answer to any variation of the name. Jen, Jenni, Jennifer, if it starts with a 'J' sound my ears always perk up.

I was just gifted with all of the partridge silkies and showgirls belonging to Sheryl Butler and Calesta Rieth. I am still learning more about the standard for the partridge color in silkies, and it is quite the work in progress. I am sad to know that two wonderful breeders in WA are no longer breeding the color, but am most grateful for their generosity in gifting them to me. The partridge rooster in the show, who was molting in his showcage (gah!) is now in my barn. I have one silkie partridge hen and several nice vaulted skull showgirl hens.

Karen had a beautiful partridge hen entered in the show.

The white cockerel I had for sale I pulled from sale Saturday afternoon as one of the judges looked at him for me and told me he has potential to be better than the cockerel with which I got Reserve of Variety in the whites.

I also came home with a nice blue Mihalik roo from Marjorie Best as well as a nice splash hen.

My black showgirl rooster didn't sell.

I think many people focus too much on pullets. I would pay far more for a great cock than a pullet, after all a cock can breed many hens whereas a hen can only lay so many eggs. Also if a hen has trouble laying or isn't a good layer, you're in bad shape, but roosters can be AI'd. Either way, it's a gamble. I haven't had fertility problems in my birds yet, but it will happen at some point.

haha, don't I know it. We had 4 in my fifth grade class. The teacher made two of us Jenny and two Jennifer. I was "Jenny 1" LOL

Weavegarden, sorry the court didn't rule in your favor. I second the suggestion to post a listing on Craigslist.

My mail doesn't get delivered for another hour or two, plus I have to wait this morning for the Dish Network guy to show up and reposition our dish. After he leaves, I will check the mail and head to the PO if needed. I haven't heard from my seller either.

I'm making mental note of this, if I ever sell eggs and ship them, I will immediately forward the buyer the tracking number and confirm shipment. I always did that with my eBay packages, and wish sellers here did it also.
