I have Coturnix and I got them older so I never had to grind the food, I gave them chick start till they were 6 weeks old then gave them the feed with higer protien. I saw these pretty Bobwhites and I really want to hatch something so I thought I might try something different. Nyrial your right they are a lot of work to begin with. With all my chicks right now I think I am gonna pass on these guys. I found them on ebay. I just want to use my incubator again.

I have read that by the time the birds have bloody diareah it is too late and they die soon afterwards.

I believe that amprolium is Coxoid(just a brand name)
I just do not understand how this outbreak could have occured if the chicks are on anti-cocci feed...unless you got it from boots as you said...or bought adult birds.
I will be sure to change my boots !!!
I have a dish pan by the coops that I wash the poo and mud off my boots, I am going to put bleach in it, at least 10% which we use in surgery...and shlosh my boots more often !

the one chicken I lost was due to my dog NOT Cocci, she had a respiratory infection and I stupidly had her in my hot tub room and my dog manages to get in......We bought teenagers...in an overcrowded room....shoulda known better

So I think my hatch is done only have two eggs left will check on them a little later.

Im so happy but I did loose one chick, it wasnt right from the start.. Poor little guy but it went pretty fast and I have to say Im glad it went when I was at work. I know I needed to help it out just is so hard to do..

But Ive got a nice hatch and I get to keep all of them

now I just hope for one roo and the rest hens LOL that will be the day

I know this is off

subject, but does anyone in Washington, know where I can get some "Red Star" Pullets? Locally would be nice. Farmers Market? I may have to order them from a Hatchery back east at the cost of $12.95 per bird and $30 shipping per bird, well, I only want four birds and that comes to roughly $150. Any idea's would nice. The reason for wanting these particular chickens is because they lat the biggest, brown egg on the market. The are very friendly and lay the largest brown egg ever.

I only want four chickens, and I had to convince my wife that four is what we needed.

Not off subject at all Gander. This thread meanders all over, and there are usually 3 or 4 subjects being discussed at once.

I'm not familiar with markets, etc, and, to be honest, I'm not even sure where Silverdale is

I would start by checking Craigslist, and local feed stores either as sources, or if they know of someone who could lead to a source. I bought (unknowingly) a Red Star from a guy off of CL last year, he was basically ordering the brown layer assortment from McMurray and then flipping the chicks. Or you might be able to find someone to go in on a larger hatchery order with you.

Good luck finding your girls though!

Hi Gander;

I haven't heard of anyone locally but have you tried farmland? There is also cenex in poulsbo and if you are willing to drive there isa feed store on Bainbridge that carries chicks. I have never seen them at dels. I would try those places first.



Ok so I need some help from everyone. I went out this am and one of my little turkins sounds like she is weezing a little, she is making this really sad sound. No one else is doing it. I have already put her back on sulmet and tetracycling with some vitamins and minerals in the water but not sure what this is. None of the other chicks has it. There feed is a medicated feed as well. Any advice would be nice....THanks all.

They are both a production 'battery' breed of chicken that is extremely productive for a few years and then the bird is tossed.
It is extremely sad.
