My friend has 4 yorkies (we live on her property) and they all chase the chickens. 2 have even cornered my roo and almost killed him several times! I would maybe go with an American cattle dog (she also has one of these), she is a great chicken watcher and she always chases off the coyotes, and very low maintenance grooming wise. Our neighbor also has one and he is the sweetest thing in the world. He comes over at least once a day to say hi and his dad said he has never had a bath lol.

This is Pepper she is so great!

Pepper is an Australian Cattle dog, also known as a Blue Heeler for the way they nip at the heels of cattle and sheep...she is beautiful !

So girls, which one of you is going to do the incubating ?
You are all so cute and work so well together !
I just hatched out (twice) a herd of BSM, and they are gorgeous.
Hopefully you are getting these most healthy and highly fertile eggs from the same person I did...not that anyone else would be any different...but ya know what I mean.
Girls, PM me....and JessicaRabbit:::
The guy who wanted my rabbit hutches has not turned up, so if you are still interested, PM me.
I believe I am going to look for a Newfie, or Pyrenese...gentle giants.
Last time I looked or was around these beauties...I fell in love, they are so protective and watchful, and big enough that they do not pose a big threat to others as they are a little slow....mellow, thoughtful dogs...not a dog physically capable of chasing, attacking chickens..and capable of learning when they are pups what is to be protected and what is not.
Inputs needed here...and remember we are planning to get hair goats next year~

Chickielady~ we are both incubating them, splitting them up and then waiting to see our babies hatch!!

and We are hoping they are healthy, they are from Cree Farms, we are driving out to meet her in Kingston Sat morning
smile.png
SOOO VERY EXCITED!!!! Maybe you could lead us in your master ways of hatching during this process
bow.gif
I think we are so tired of getting sick birds that it's time try this ourselves!! So here we go, new chapter of this awesome venture!!

By the way the roo is still hangin on but he still isn't doing any better.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am ready to drive up there and see this roo~~~
And I am NOT a master hatcher, just a few months ago I had purchased a new and expensive hygrometer that misread...and drowned an entire hatch by having the humidity WAY TOO high, so the chicks drowned on pip...I knew that it was too high, droplets on the bator windows, but it was too late. I had only 2 survive.
Now I have 1 mercury and 2 digital therms in each of my bators !
And I follow what Zgoatlady told me: 30% for 18 days, and then up to 50% but never over 70%.
and keep your temp at 99.5, and I only candle at day 18, then lockdown.
Some people candle everyday and it is asking for trouble as far as I am concerned, not necessary to threaten the life of these developing babies...
Candle on day 18, if you have clears, toos them, all others, return to the bator flat, not in a turner, and lockdown, and do not help them hatch, THERE, that is my advise.
Anyone else, advise these people on their first hatch !

Just a bit of FYI: "heelers" as they are sometimes called (Australian Cattle dog) can sometimes have attitude problems. Make sure to buy from a reputible breeder and meet mom and dad dog, if you can, and get to know their personalities. I am not a big fan of heelers some of them I have known can be really aggressive....but I must say that my neighbors have the nicest little red heeler I have ever met...she is such a sweet heart. Just really check them out first. I have heard good things about Bouvier DesFlandres , but I have never met one. I live in Aussie (australian shepard) or heeler (austrailian cattle dog) or boarder collie country (cow country. Remember that these breeds are meant to work. They will get in trouble if they get board, they want to have a purpose.

Hi Everyone!!
frow.gif

Its been awhile since I posted. So I noticed everyone talking about dogs. My chicken protector is a black german shepherd. He has absolutly no interest in my chickens and in fact is very protective of them. He is wonderful! He comes from stock that is all German and these dogs are breed to have little to no pray drive. Colt is absolutly wonderful to our family and our chickens!!!

So we are currently on wait time. My broody hen who somehow went from 5 eggs to 12 eggs will be on day 21 tomorrow. She has 2 guinea eggs under her that I hope she manages to hatch and then 10 eggs that are a mixture of polish, cochin, araucana(yes they are real) and EE's plus some jersey giants, however the roo is a true Araucana so the mixes will be interesting!! I hope to see babies soon but am not sure we are ready for 12 or that the new mama can handle it...any advice would be very much appreciated!!!

Welcome to anyone that is new on here!!

Just went thru the web sites, what a wonderful dog !
But DH raised dobies in his youth (and weiriemers and Scottish Collies) and said he has spent so many years in the show ring and Bouviers are high maintenance, and remain child-like for years, not mentally a herd/outside dog and not quite a "foo foo dog" that must be coiffed and clipped....
I have always wanted a newfie, and this is the perfect time to dig this up.
Dig up my love, of the big black velvet head and bright brown eyes....the big shaggy black velvet dog...this is my brother's newfie in Enumclaw...her name is miss E

the black "german shepard" dog is quite often actually a "Belgian Shepard" and is a wonerful breed, I had several as a teen/young adult and am not so sure they are good with fowl, but it has been said before that exceptions are always out there...As far as I have seen, and DH in his dog show youth, there is no black german shepard.
The Belgian is an awesome dog, though. That is probably what you had~~

absolutely no need to justify your decision tis after all your Dog AND your Chickens
wink.png
....be happy with whatever dog you choose and remember that training and individual temperment are still paramount and as such a pitbull could turn out to be the one and one you think is good could turn out to not work....good luck in your search either way....Oh by the way look at my avatar my current four leggers cant be trusted with ANYTHING

Are they buggers or what ?

But all the same, beautiful dogs, and I noticed that before.
I think the Bouvier des Flandes looks perfect, size and hair and all, how much time was needed for the coat ?
Do they continue to grow hair like a sheep/poodle ?
