I'm sure glad it pipped before it got to the garbage! 26 days is pretty late!

I almost did this with my call duck eggs--they were waay overdue (which means my math was just bad--you'd think I could count out 23-25 days right?? lol) I figgered I should candle 'em before tossing, and sure enough, there were little bodies in there moving around! that's the hatch that Lucky came from.

I am so so upset ~~ all my shipped eggs had detached air cells, I didn't know you were supposed to rest them before setting them. oh oh oh oh.. I am so mad at myself, because it looks like only 3 of the eggs are 'okay'.. and those are questionable.

I was just sick last night about it.... Then yesterday when I came home from work, I notice that two of my broody girls were out running around the main yard, and had been off their nests for goodness knows how long, the eggs were cold. I was ready to chop off their silly hen heads right there! I locked them in 'lock down' in their hutches with food and water and there they can stay the remainder of their hatch... oooo. I hope the eggs will be okay.

T-Hi --your ducky palace is coming along!

It is drizzly, here, right now. Not real rain...just misty almost....but it is enough to bring out the earthworms and all the kids are out of the run/coop and are free ranging and are loving the banquet. They are all having fun.

OK NOW I NEED A BB GUN!!!

Jefner, sorry about your shipped eggs. I've had quite a few bad batches this spring. I think someone in the USPS is on a search for boxes with eggs and shaking them all really hard or something!

Sparklerose, how old are your chicks? Can you move them into a brooder in the house or garage until they are bigger? Or, protect your coop/run with more hardware cloth or something? How exactly is the cat getting to them? So sorry it is back. Can you take it to the pound?

Yeah! BB Gun!

Actually I want something more hardcore than that, unfortunately I don't know much about guns, so I wouldn't know what to look for. Always been against having one in the house with kids, but now DH and I are considering it for precisely that reason. Cats, Coyotes and Coons.

Anyone here have something they recommend? Any way to train your kids not to mess with it? We were thinking hooks above the back door. They couldn't reach that even standing on a chair.

Unfortunately, you are going to need more than a BB gun. I have a BB gun and I use it...but, a ferral will come back. I have one that is harrassing MY cats and the BB gun is not enough. My chick are bigger, so I don't know if he would bother them, but my roo Tyson does a pretty good job too. I make sure everyone is locked up at night, cuz I do not know if a cat will pull a full size hen (or a teenage one) off a roost. Anyone know? I hate the thought of having to shoot this ferral cat, but he is causing problems. The BB sting has not kept him away....so now I need to do something else.

We have guns in the house (hubbies) they are under lock and key and bullets are elsewhere under lock and key....and I have older kids. As far as I am concerned, let them shoot, under supervision so they learn how....but I don't trust any of my kids when it comes to guns...that sounds awful doesn't it? I just don't want them to make a stupid decision...I dunno...stupid teenage things and get a gun out and have something bad happen.

My husband actually has a pellet gun...but it is as powerful as a .22...it can kill.

their all teenagers now fully feathered. I have 20 out side plus my 18 week olds and my silkie couple. it's a pretty big fenced area where they all free range with a play house converted into a coop and then another tractor style coop then a small barn in the back. can't find my camera to take a pic. i fed my outdoor cats canned food then put some in the trap and put it back where I caught him the first time. I'm not sure how he comes in the area isn't covered so there are plenty of ways for him to get in. I would find the bodies in the back kinda by the barn. I think he came in and would wait back there then when one of the babies would come by he would just grad it and eat it there. we just had huge rain coulds roll over and it is starting to rain so maybe I can get them all in. repo they are running for cover... I'm onb my porch typing and watching.
