so now after two weeks and a few days of coop building I have newbie questions.....is there a difference in taste or treatment of eggs if you have a roo in the flock (our last time doing chickens we did hens only)? ...if so doi/can i seperate the roo into his own pen or a tractor without ill effects on him? ...or does he just hang with the girls? we have 11 hens and a roo at 2weeks right now and the coop shell is almost done but due to funding issues the rest wont be done for a couple weeks yet.

I am very aware of what happened from the beginning. And in no way do I believe it was Cocci, and the fact that 1 person had lice or mites has nothing to do with the rest of the state of Washington,

Please do not scare new people that 'we' are infested with these problems.
You are your circle of freinds had an issue, not the state.
I do believe you care properly for your birds, you got the parasites from someone else, none of this is about you personally, it is just a statement that here in Washington we do not have a lice, mite or cocci infestation, rampis or otherwise.
It was just that one person, and it is a shame that you, and Jess got the bad deal...I feel bad for you as you already well know.
But like you said, you got them from someone ekse.
If you go back and read your post, it sounds very much like 'we' all have 'rampid lice, mites and cocci' that statement never told anyone where you got it, or that it was an isolated incident, all it sounded like was that you all had it...it was your wording that was wrong, and very scarey to a newcomer.

No worries. I'm not scared off at all...I'm soaking up as much information as I can to keep my chicks as healthy as possible, and to be able to identify and treat anything quickly.

With all the talk about Mareks in other areas of the forum, and since you can get chicks vaccinated right from the hatchery, I was mostly wondering if people around here DO give the vaccine. Also IF there is much Mareks around. I dunno. I called the feed stores where I bought the chicks, and they said they have NOT been vaccinated.

I love reading about everyones adventures with hatching. If one of my ladies goes broody, I'll definitely be doing that next year and will try and find some fertile eggs.

at such a loss right now! BF just completely went back on everything! I know have no where to put my day olds!!!!!! The area we were going to be turning into a brooder he has decided I can't use... even though it has been nothing more than a catchall as far back as I can recall! I am so mad! What do I do now when all my eggs hatch? uggghhhhh!!! it makes me sick!

P.S. he thinks it is perfectly fine to just put day old down in with all the other chickens......... anyone have an idea how to explain why you shouldn't?

JessicaRabbit, just get a large plastic bin and use that for a brooder.

Many people use them and they work well. How old are your older chicks? I wouldn't put 1 day olds in with older chicks, but if they are within a few weeks of each other, give the new chicks a week to gain their strength after hatching, make sure they are eating/drinking ok, and then I've mixed in younger with older before and it usually works. If you have a meany older one in the bunch, pull THAT one out and keep him isolated for a day to let the others connect. Then put the mean one back in. If he's still agressive, hold him out by himself for two days and then try again. I have found this to work well. I have 3 wk old chicks downstairs, and only 2 from my hatch last Thursday. I would normally try and integrate them by the end of this week but will be traveling and so will do it next week when I get back. Of course, I am home all day and can check on them regularly. If you work all day, don't know if this would work or not. Maybe wait until a Friday so you can watch over a weekend? Good luck!

Oh I so understand how you feel, my husband said I cant get the rooster from LaSombra. He said I have to much on my plate. I tell you what Im going to have him on my plate.... He's almost done with our new coop and he said something has to go.. So LaSombr how long can you keep him... Oh you know if you find him a good home let them have him. Im so upset right now.... But I have to understand what hes saying.
I do have like 50 chickens and chicks and than my goats can you say 30+. Than the dogs 5 and cats 6. So I guess I need to get the dairy going and than get the eggs sold. Our fridge is full of eggs right now, but a man just stoped by and got 5 doz..

I need to know when everyone wants eggs so can you PM me please...

Yep! That's where we were! Our whole family does it through a Granite Falls school and we test with Mr. Bailey as well. My husband and one of our daughters tested Friday (DH went from blue to purple, DD went from 2nd blue to 1st blue). Congrats to your daughter and it's cool to see another TKD person on here from our school!

They're here! Finally I have my girls. Thanks to Jenn, LaSombra, for raising them for me. What a brood she has. My girls are doing great drinking from the nipple waterers right way and eating too. Now I just have to get them to explore the run. I'll give them a few days to get used to the new digs before I coax them out. I think they may be a little intimidated by the new place and the sound of my dogs right nearby.

It's fun meeting people that we only know through the internet. Ain't technology fun?

However, there will be enough girls in my coop for 2 roos. Since they're still young, though, I can hold on to this extra roo for quite a while. I'll have to play it by ear and see how it works out.
