I was using a 10# sledge to pound in big stakes to hold up the fruit trees...and wacking away when the post split and the sledge swung over and smacked me right in the left shinbone************** stars! Cusswords not even invented yet!!!!***********and DH was gone, and I was sure I had broken the bone, so crawled inside and iced, and days later still have a bone bruise and 3 weeks later it is still black, turning yellow, and my BP was 127/70 way too high for me !
But as we have seen a million times in surgery, pain makes the BP skyrocket, even simple stress like going in for a physical exam can raise the BP alot !
Hope you are OK !
I will remember that next time I pick up my post driver ! Rest, and be careful !

and I thought I was accident prone!!! Girl you be careful!!

Oh the past two weeks have been hard on my body. lol a week ago I was mowed over by one of my clients horses, screwed up my wrist pretty bad. Was kicked by another clients horse, luckily just had a bruise from that, my husband lost his job, then I knock myself out. lmao My luck with injuries has just got to change for the better soon. I have SO much work to do around here, not to mention my 3 clients who count on me to care for their horses... I have gardens that need tending, fencing that needs to go up, a coop to update, a coop for the banam polish to build, an almost 2 year old to care for, two horses that still need to be worked, a third horse coming in next week, dogs that want attention, lots of lawn that HAS to be mowed before my house disapears, and all these sweet little chicks to care for. lol I cant allow myself to be laid up for uch longer. Thank goodness I have allot of family who are willing to help me out.

Sheesh ! No wonder your BP is up !
You sound like you are taking on an awful lot !
Care for yourself, you really are all you 've got~~~and so many counting on you.
You could be the poster girl for the American Woman !
I wish you the best !

lol That what I'm trying to do. If I do anything at all I think it will be cleaning my house. I thought about mowing my lawn, but that might not be a good idea, with my balence being way off. Don't want another ER trip today.

Thanks everyone your all wonderful!

You do not want the ER bill, either.
Safer and cheaper to hire a teen to mow for you !

That is an amazing story! So glad that no one was injured.

I drive down your street all the time to avoid the speed bumps. Just watch for a pearl coloured Ford Escape. Pretty obvious which is your house. hee hee! The banner out front was a dead giveaway.

I'm 2 houses west of Betty's house. She's a good friend, and also likes chickens. That was a wild night. Betty called about 10:30 saying she couldn't get ahold of family and her porch was blowing off. We pulled off about half of her porch roof to let the air through and then demolished and carried a retaining wall up on top piling the rocks and cement to hold it down. Then I noticed that her roof shingles were going too, so we carried a bunch of scrap lumber out of my shed and carried it up onto her roof. I have vivid memories of belly crawling across her roof dragging 4x4s. Finally we could do nothing else. I told her I'd leave my backdoor unlocked so if she needed a refuge she could just come over. About 10 minutes later I was in bed and heard a quiet "Whoosh" no crashing, splintering, or screaming nothing. I thought that was a weird noise and got back up to check on my chicken coop. Standing at the back door I noticed that the sky was beautiful, lots of stars. Then it dawned on me that I normally couldn't see the sky. The giant cottonwood had disappeared. I don't know how, but I knew it had come down on Betty; she had been worried about that tree for years. I was out of the house in a flash, I dressed as I was running. Neighbors told me later that they saw me running down the street with no pants on. Lol! Fortunately Betty was OK. As you saw it came through the center of the house down to the foundation. If it had fallen a couple feet west it would have landed on her bed. It brought down the interior of the house on top of her. She managed to crawl out over the debris to her kitchen. She thought she had been bombed or something blew up. We are both glad it didn't fall earlier when we were both directly under it.

Russ-I can answer the question "Does a tree make a sound when it falls?" NO!

BTW- there are 3 houses on this street with chickens. Used to be 4, but Betty couldn't deal with the mess.

Ladies and Gents what do you do if anything about footwear and the chicken/garden areas as far as your home is concerned?...we got the coop up this weekend and I just realized we are inevitably going to track....pics will come when I figure that out and it isnt complete but it is solid ( we realized the brooder wasnt big enough as they grew so they now have the whole 6by10 coop but no run as of yet

I have a pair of crocs and a pair of rain boots both of which are dedicated to my chicken areas. I keep them right outside my front door so when I go out to tend the girls I slip one of them on depending on the weather. Obviously this week I have predominantly worn the rain boots!

I tried posting in the emergencies/illness section but have barely gotten a response and nothing helpful. I hope I'm not breaking any rules but I really don't want to lose another bird! Does anyone have any helpful advice?

I've searched and searched trying to figure out what the deal is with no luck so I'm finally going to post and ask.

I have a pullet whose exact age is unknown. She was given to me about 3 weeks ago and I was told at the time she was somewhere between 9-12 weeks old. The person who gave her to me gave her to replace a hen that she had also given to me (with a rooster) but the hen died. I believe that they had cocci based on bloody diarrhea, droopy wings, listlessness and the hen got to the point where she would no longer eat or drink. I tried feeding her and she appeared to get better but then suddenly had a seizure or something and died.

I did medicate them with Sulmet and my rooster seems to be doing fine now.

Back to my pullet; She has had diarrhea and since she came from the same place I was treating her for that. She has just finished a course of Corid but still seems to have the diarrhea (but no blood. I do have the "poo page" and trust me I've poured over it. Hers isn't in the normal range.) Her other issue is she has an eye that is closed or almost closed. Her other eye is fine, her eyes were fine when I got her but several days ago I noticed one of her eyes was a tiny bit swollen and partially closed. Over the past few days it's gotten to where it seems to be always closed though the swelling isn't worse. I have noticed she is itching it a lot. I have checked all of my birds for bugs, lice, fleas, ticks, UFO's, Arnold Schwarzenegger and everything else I can think of!

I had tried washing her eye out and there was no change. I have a picture that I will include here. She is continuously itching that side of her face, especially her eye. There is also no color on that side while the other side of her face has reddish/pink coloring and her eye is open. She is now listing to one side (toward the good side of her face) and is very sleepy, droopy and listless. She will eat if placed by the food and I had seen her drink yesterday but not today. She can barely stay standing and I'm very afraid I'm going to lose her. I cleaned out the hutch she's in and found that her poop has now taken on that bright green look that it gets when they aren't getting the nutrition they need.

Today because I noticed the bright green poo I mixed up some baby bird formula with the water and vitamin drops and dropper fed her some. I placed her on the roost back in her cleaned hutch and she's just sitting on the roost dozing. Her hutch mate seems to be fine. She's perky and running around and when I mess with the sick girl the other one is very concerned. She was most displeased with me for cleaning out her hutch too.

On hand I have Duramyacin, Sulmet, Corid, Vitamin drops, DE, Ivermectin and another Sulfer based drug whose name I can't recall off the top of my head but it's a different med than the Sulmet. If anyone can offer any advice on what to do for her I'd really appreciate it. I've already lost one hen who I got from the same place this little girl came from. In fact, she was supposed to be a replacement for the first one.

Please don't get cranky at me. I am new to chickens and if I knew what to do for her I wouldn't be posting here.

You are not alone and yes you can post this here. First, I had the same problem that you have. I got two blue Marans that seem to have many of the same symptoms you have. Both ended up with eyes that closed and one has actually lost one of her eyes. They were puffy and tended to sleep alot. No other pullets in my little barn have experienced the same thing. THese two also have had diarrea problems and issues with eating. I placed them on Sulmet for a week, took them off a week, then repeated this 3 times. I also had them on the powdered tetracycline and also added the vitamins and electrolytes to the water while they were on the sulmet. I also changed their food to the medicated chick starter. The good news is after all of that they seem to have finally pulled through but it was a fight. I also had them under a red heat lamp(not sure it helped but who knows) The bad news is like I said one lost her eye. I have no idea what this is and am not sure what more to do. This is what I did to try and pull my girls through and it seems to have worked. I wish you luck on your hen and hope someone out there knows what exactly this is. Good luck...and let me know how it turns out.
