These little buggers fly really lazy in still air, like right now, when it is humid and still.
They look like gnats...or vinegar flies we get in potted plants that commit suicide in your glass of wine.
They must have a bloodmeal to lay eggs...females only.
They lay eggs in composty-fertile soft soil and must be wet.
Dryness kills them.
They crawl right into your hair and bite !
They bite the birds, rabbits and dogs/cats.
They crawl right through window screens.
Spray in the yard does not do anything but kills those there, not the larvae...wind keeps them in the dirt..they are poor fliers.
Protect yourself !
They can carry alot of diseases too, lovely.

Yet again : "COME ON DRY WEATHER!" I am so sick of being bitten by the plague ridden buggies!!!!!!! the bites seem to itch ten times worse than a skeeter bite!!!!!!!!

NWChicks.... So sorry about your chickens. It is so hard to have them be ill, I can't imagine what you went through having one die and then having to euthanize one is just awful...

Oystershell YES!

I have started just buying a bag of each 25-50lbs and putting them in a large container with holes in it to let the water out. They eat freely from it and sometimes scratch, but it has lasted a long time, so I don't worry about it... Less than $20 for probably what is a years supply for 12 hens.

(I don't have all of the chickens now, so I will answer what worked when I did have more chickens)

Personally I want my chickens to have access to food constantly throughout the day. Since they free range, having their layer available all day is better in my opinion, because at least then they eat a little bit of it. Mostly they want worms, grass and cabbage, fruit and yoghurt.

I was reminded by a friend that chickens used to live quite well on corn and free range for years. So don't stress the food too much. Just make it available. One of my girls (a buff orp) hated all layer food, and would just live on ranged foods and scratch..... She layed an average of 5 eggs a week, so she wasn't suffering any ill effects in that department.

But get the oystershell in there. It builds strong eggs. They won't over eat it.

Thanks Chickielady. I really do appreciate local support. I am looking at the real estate guide that comes out in the Daily World.... But so far nothing that I could ever afford, or it is pretty much underwater most days of the year.

We need to meet at some point. I would love to know someone who lived closer than 50 miles from me who is a chicken person... A real chicken person!

Some of the people locally who offered to take the chickens didn't even know what kind of chickens they had. Or thought they did and were very wrong. One guy had cuckoo marans and thought they were BR. Seems like the white legs and skin should have clued him in. Another had sex link male chicks about 6 weeks of age and was convinced that they were all gonna be br hens. When I told them what they had, they didn't believe me. Ah well, the crowing just might convince them in a couple of weeks. LOL

Anyway, maybe we can meet one day at the Dairy Queen in Raymond for oyster burgers.

That is all.

Although I have to add.. *note to self* When staying home sick, be sure DH puts house rooster OUTSIDE before crowing time.

If you like oysters... Think... A soft squishy roll with a little tarter and a mound of lettuce topped with 3-4 smallish oysters that have been lightly breaded and fried (not over fried) in butter. Then topped with the other half of the roll. Yummy!

I love oysters.... Raw, fried, scalloped, stew, cooked in the shell over a campfire........ But I hate them over cooked and dry - Yuck!

Well, as long as I am monopolizing this page.....

I still want to attend a campout with us chicken folk.... Anybody game to do the planning with me. I am limited on what I can physically do and have a hard time with organization.... But I am a good idea person. And I would want it to be somewhat accessible for those of us who can't hike in and etc.
