our bees fly like crazy whenever there is a spot of sun... i peeked in our newer hive on a cooler day, (i was curious!) and they were all in there fanning.. keeping warm.. buzzing away. We DID have to actually supplement with a couple frames of honey this spring though.. cold cold cold.

The rivers are so high right now!

this is a good question..we have a small pack of crows that hang out and eat in the compost pile, considering I have seen hawks within a cityblock of my place I kind of like the crows hanging out

Well, this is exactly how diseases are passed. The quail, crows and others fly in and spread it all about by their poo...and by touch.
So much so that the Dept Wildlife highly discourages feeding birds right now as they all gather at feeders and exchange diseases.
On Crows...I have seen crows land, and walk right into a hencoop, and steal eggs, and fly away.
I also have heard they can land, walk in and steal a baby chick or young pullet.
They gotta eat too, and are extremely smart, and oppurtunistic as well...leave your sandwich on the table and go inside for the mustard.....POOF !
Who took my sandwich ?

DH says he likes to watch them grab a few walnuts and fly way up and drop them on the asphalt, then fly down to eat the bits, and if that isn't enough we have seen them all gather by the side of the road and put walnuts in the street, and they waite for a car to run them over...then walk out and dine on the nut meats.
Hysterical, huh ?

I would try to keep all other birds away from mine, and not let them walk about and poo where my birds will be either.

We have a huge flock of crows that live in our greenbelt, and generally I don't mind them, because they are excellent watch birds to keep away the other family of birds that live on the green belt--hawks. BUT, little rascals do steal eggs!! I had gathered some and set them on one of my smaller hutches.. got busy doing something else and promptly forgot about them.. Came back later to several less eggs and no sign of where they went.... I am only guessing it was a crow..... I dont feed as much scrap as I used to, and if I do, I toss it waaay under the hens favorite bushes... because the crows were very eager to come down and steal chicken treats... they see my yard as McCrow drive thru...

This looks like my baby run, except for the bird net over the entire 1/2 acre, tower with spotlight and guard with machine gun turret....fence wire bent down over the ground so no digs

LOL! Will, no Raccoon or anything else is going over the top of that fence nor underneath it as I have railroad ties. Those disks do work great.

I am a Northwest native but this gloom and wet is beginning to get to me. I hurt so much more and can't seem to move. Even now I am needing to paint, and I just can't seem to be able to move. I just don't think that the lights should have be on all day. I am wondering if that the reason that some of the girls have stopped laying. I know that I am not getting enough sunlight.

I am beginning to miss the Chicken Thief. The raids are just not the same with a just a white egg lover sidekick, and no thief. We still haven't got the weave to join us in the dirty deeds that need to be done to help save some of these lovely hatcher's of egg layers. I think that we provide a great community service. I might just have to break down and make a telephone call to the Rustler and spouse.

P.S. I am really happy to know that most of the group from earlier this year are still lurking around. I think we really need the Weave to lead us down the path again. OH! wait I have a car, we could drive places. Watch your coops if we ever need to have another adventure.

Yeah. It's the shipping that kills you. Last time I did this, I had a few other people come over so I only threw away 900 doses of vaccine. This time it'll probably be 980. Oh well.

Then it came back and was rummaging in and stole something from my compost pile... This needs to stop or my pullets will be next.
