Well, this is exactly how diseases are passed. The quail, crows and others fly in and spread it all about by their poo...and by touch.
So much so that the Dept Wildlife highly discourages feeding birds right now as they all gather at feeders and exchange diseases.
On Crows...I have seen crows land, and walk right into a hencoop, and steal eggs, and fly away.
I also have heard they can land, walk in and steal a baby chick or young pullet.
They gotta eat too, and are extremely smart, and oppurtunistic as well...leave your sandwich on the table and go inside for the mustard.....POOF !
Who took my sandwich ?
DH says he likes to watch them grab a few walnuts and fly way up and drop them on the asphalt, then fly down to eat the bits, and if that isn't enough we have seen them all gather by the side of the road and put walnuts in the street, and they waite for a car to run them over...then walk out and dine on the nut meats.
Hysterical, huh ?
I would try to keep all other birds away from mine, and not let them walk about and poo where my birds will be either.
We have a huge flock of crows that live in our greenbelt, and generally I don't mind them, because they are excellent watch birds to keep away the other family of birds that live on the green belt--hawks. BUT, little rascals do steal eggs!! I had gathered some and set them on one of my smaller hutches.. got busy doing something else and promptly forgot about them.. Came back later to several less eggs and no sign of where they went.... I am only guessing it was a crow..... I dont feed as much scrap as I used to, and if I do, I toss it waaay under the hens favorite bushes... because the crows were very eager to come down and steal chicken treats... they see my yard as McCrow drive thru...
Here too ! I just saw one steal a rib bone out of the dog run, Doofus was asleep !
Then it came back and was rummaging in and stole something from my compost pile... This needs to stop or my pullets will be next.
