Congrats on your hatches!!! My turkeys are due tomorrow... everyone keeps saying how difficult it is to hatch turkeys out here but I am not giving up hope! Just REALLY worried! lol

Your turkeys should come out great now that it is dryer, it was the high humidity that makes turkeys more difficult to hatch.
Hope all goes well !!!
It is really quiet what with Zgoatlady gone, Illia gone, your friends all quiet...we are practically the last thread on the forum list !!!!!

Okay, I guess I should ask....are vaccinations a normal thing i should be doing for my birds, like kids, cats, and dogs?

Everything I have read says that you should ALWAYS vaccinate for Mareks.... not too sure about the other stuff, I know I have my Mareks vaccine in the fridge waiting for my last hatch.... in my personal opinion it is best to play it safe and Mareks is SO common so vaccinate I will.

That is up to you.
If you value your poultry, and/or have invested alot of money and love your birds, you should consider vaccinating them.
Everyone who vaccinates also helps prevent the spread of these horrible diseases.
Some, like Marek's, are so contagious and symptoms so varied that your birds can be infected from a single fluff or feather from an infected bird miles away.
Newcastle and alot of others are carried by wild birds...and mosquitos.
I am going to do Marek's, Newcastle and Fowl Pox...not all at once.

Some of these diseases can kill before you notice syptoms, others like Marek's can take a month of slow death while the birds are eaten alive inside by cancerous lesions.
I feel it is the responsibility of poultry owners to vaccinate, and educate others who have birds and have no idea what these diseases are.

The vaccines are cheap, the shipping can get spendy comparatively as the vaccines must be kept cold...and if you are squeemish the whole process of vaccinating the birds could be too much for alot of people...and be careful not to vaccinate yourself !
I almost did that when I was giving one of my dogs a shot in the neck scruff !!!

We all here on this thread witnessed the slow and horrible death of some of our friend's birds.
This was devastating to their flock, and to the owners of these birds who had gone to great lengths nursing the birds, with medications and hand feeding to no avail as there is no cure once the bird is infected, and as stated, these viruses are everywhere and can take days, to weeks before you notice any symptoms.
I noticed during the sunny day yesterday alot of my babies were falling asleep while in the sun, and how it looks to the observer that these birds may be sunning, then again, they could have the beginnings of disease.
Marek's is scarey !

I am having to give 2 insulin shots a day to dog. My birds are not necessarily lots of dollars, they are pets with the perk of giving me eggs. When I take on a pet, I take on the responsibility if it were a child. If vaccinations are what keeps them healthy, then I need to learn more. The last time I had birds 10+ years ago, I had never heard of vaccinating birds and I still am new. Is this intramuscular or subcutaneous? I have given cats and dogs shots (hate doing it). Can I get the vaccine from my vet for the chickens? Feed store?

I am not sure about your area, I myself had to order it online, mine says to give it in the back of the neck....

Off subject...... my mom just told me she is going to get me some buff laced polish for my birthday...... YAY!

Hello all! Its been a busy week. Sad news... Again... My broody Barred Rock hen has diasapeared. All our efforts to break her of her broodyness, and trying to keep her from returning to her old coop failed... I'm fairly certain that she was taken by a coon, but can not be sure, as she was here three days ago, then she was gone...

On the up-side, my chicks are all doing great. They are loving their new coop that I built last week, and already put themselves to bed at dusk! I'm so proud of them. My three remaining adult hens, beg me to put them up for the night. Stubbs, "my Eeg'r" will run circles around my feet until I lock their run for the evening. Its really cute. My brothers girlfriend, has named my little Polish pullet Fro Fro... The name stuck, and I'm really not sure how or why.

Cheryl I am so sorry about your loss.

Have you completely healed up from your knock on the head?

To all the rest I am here and I am reading everything daily

, but DH has been home all week. He seems to take up a lot of time, and he expects me to cook dinner every night. After 12 years of not having to cook during the week this past year has been a real pain in the hiney. I am just too spoiled rotten. But this way the girls get more scraps and trimmings from making salads. I am going to have to look into vaccinating the chickies. I have been doing vaccines for the puppies and cats every since the kids talked me into saving the roosters life 11 years ago. So I know I can do it. It still isn't my favorite thing to do. I need to give everyone here a booster, but I somehow manage to avoid doing it.

Does anyone want a couple of bantie roos? I can tell that I have 3 or 4 roos in the batch of banties that I picked up from the store a couple of weeks ago. The banties are really cute. I need to post some pictures of them. The fizzle is my favorite. I am still praying that Frizz isn't a roo. I saw it acting like a roo, but it doesn't have a comb developing. So I am hoping that she was just dishing it back at the boys.
