I have never heard of electrical storms killing embryos, where did you hear of it ?
I have heard that close by lightening strikes can breathe new or maximum life into a vegetable garden as it releases nitrogen into the soil...but do not know that that is true either.
Seems to me if the strike was close enough to zap nitrogen into the soil, that it would fry your tomatoe plants

So sorry your babies did not make it !!!

Will you get the hen some other fertile eggs or maybe one or two other ducklings or goslings to raise ?

We have snuk in the coop at dark, removed the eggs and replaced them with babies from the feed store...works great !

chickielady~ it is the vibrations from the thunder that are supposed to be harmful... I had never heard of it before either.. sounded kinda funny but? who knows!

We originally looked for 5 - 10 acres so I could satisfy some of my 'city girl harboring farm girl' fantasies. We ended up finding a 2 1/2 acre place that we both fell in love with (so the 'horse' part of the dream was definitely out). I had not even considered ducks at that point (even though I have a collie desperate to herd) so we hadn't looked for a place with a pond. My husband now realizes that is the one short coming here, and threatens to bring in a back hoe and try digging me one. We're guessing that involves all kinds of permits, and wouldn't work that well anyway, so I'm stuck with my plastic wading pools for now. Our neighbor has a pond which I'm envious of, but she's lost lots of water fowl over the years (probably to coyotes and raccoons) so now it harbors only wild ducks and is getting quite over grown. If there was a way for me to rent it from her and make it more predator proof I would, but that will never happen.

You and your husband will have soooo much fun finding a property to fulfill your dreams and what better place than here on the Island.

I'm looking forward to moments like that, we have three little Black Silkie chicks doing their best to burn everyone's eyes with their outstanding cuteness!

My Silkies are definitely everyone's favorite as well. My husband, who grew up on a farm in Scotland and never had any interest in doing farm animals again, keeps telling me he wishes we would have started with the Silkies and just stuck with them. He's in awe of how calm they are and what great mothers they make.

I <3 silkies! I have three partridge hens and I LOVE them! They are the BEST mommas.. and they really do have an amazing cuteness factor. Whenever we have some one new over, they always wanna know what are those teddy bear chickens????

My friend has a pet rooster she actually has made into a house chicken.. (he wears one of those special diapers they make) she loves it. He is actually going on vacation this week with her, I can't wait to see him! lol!

Still am out in Westport, so have not seen baby chick yet. Must exercise patience. Word from home is that eggs # 2, 6 and 8 are pipping. We were not sure about egg # 8 as we could not see any developement because of the thick shell and thought that it might not be. We nearly gave up on it.

Still can't figure out how to post a photo of our little chick.

Ok really!!!? Catching a cold at the end of June? I've been trying to convince myself that it was just allergies. Ugh! I feel awful! '

LOoraine- Ya I am pretty sure they are boys. Just the hoarse raspy quack thing. No curled tail feather yet though.
