Hello Washingtonians

T Hi sorry for your loss.

My family and I want to move to Washington. We are looking at the north central and north eastern part of the state, but any place would do other than the semi arrid desert parts. It is hard to get a good idea about an area over the internet. I am hoping some of you can help me out. Do any of you live off the grid or are any of you homesteading it? Do any of you have kids in scouts or 4-H?

Some of the things I am interested in are

Snow fall totals (We really like snow).
Rain fall totals (rain water harvesting, I have read it is illegal to harvest rain water).
Summer heat and humidity (I don’t like high humidity).
How many sunny days (solar panels)
Can I reuse my Gray water?
Can I have a Compost toilet?

Thanks
Michael

That is about my average for eggs a day to. I also gave my MiL 4 dozen eggs tonight. They add up with that many coming in per day. Congratulations.

With all my millions of chickens (as my Mom says) I am getting a whopping 3 eggs a day if I am very very lucky.
We have a farm-wide molt going on here and half bald chickens running around and it looks like it is snowing when a breeze kicks up !

I have a second girl molting right now too! I was a little suprised that they would start molting right now. I got zero eggs yesterday. ZERO! I couldn't believe it! Slackers.

Welcome Michael! I don't know the answers to all of your questions but wanted to say howdy.

Where I live we go by the Everett forecast but add about 5 degrees in the summer and subtract 5 degrees in the winter. I tend to get more rain being snugged up against the foothills and we get snow a little more often than the rest of the area around us. My SIL lives in North Bend (East of Bellevue) in the foothills. She lives fairly high up compared to North Bend proper and always has snow before us.

I know there are people who use solar panels around the area but I don't have any personal experience with them. I just recall reading an article about a guy on one of the islands who was getting money back from the utility company because he was actually supplying to them. I don't know if he had his whole house covered in them or what but it was working for him.

My kids are in 4-H Riflry and there are several clubs around the area. We are up at o'dark o'clock every Saturday morning through the whole school year so they can go shoot. They don't like getting up but they love the shooting part. I know there are some on here who do small animals so I'll let them speak for themselves.

I can give this a shot for you.

Snow fall totals (We really like snow). - That's going to be incredibly dependent on where you want to live. Annual rain and snowfall will be dependent upon the altitude and location (i.e. are you on the rainwall side of the mountains, or the lee). http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/online/ccd/snowfall.html

Rain
fall totals (rain water harvesting, I have read it is illegal to harvest rain water). - Depends where in Northeastern Washington, it can be 5 inches annually to 50. You can indeed harvest your own rainwater. Your system does have to make certain requirements of your locality, based on their groundwater levels. For more information: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wr/hq/rwh.html

Summer
heat and humidity (I don’t like high humidity). - it's generally hot on the eastern side of Washington, but the humidity isn't too bad. http://www.climate.washington.edu/faq.html

How
many sunny days (solar panels) - Very dependent on where you area. For example: Spokane has 86 days annually of sunshine. Generally speaking, solar panels aren't a great idea in Washington state. http://www.solarwashington.org/

Can
I reuse my Gray water? Yes. http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/ts/WW/GreywaterFact.PDF

Can
I have a Compost toilet? Depends on your soil-type and where the underground water line is. Check with your county for guidelines.

I can't answer a lot of your homesteading/weather questions, but I can tell you that Snohomish County is one of the most active 4-H counties in the state. My oldest has been in 4-H for 6 yrs now, and my younger two have also been involved for several years. There are a million projects and lots of clubs to choose from. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to help!

Ok I want to start to hatch my own eggs ..Have questions I want to buy the 1588 Genesis incubator with the 1611 egg turner is this a good one ? I have read that you will need to make sure the eggs are in the right position? Do they have to rest for any lenght of time? And can still buy hatching eggs from the hatcheries , even if they are not selling babies

....Any comments would be great

..I put this in the incubating and hatching eggs and only got three answers...

Kim
Would you like some free eggs??? I have lots
D.gif
. My girls are laying pretty good right now
thumbsup.gif
. All except my one white leghorn. she hasn't layed an egg since MAY 18th
rant.gif
. I don't think she is molting. maybe she is just old
hu.gif
She is one I added to my flock (with my BR) late. her days are numbered I think. she will be gone by the end of Sept. if she don't start producing

Is anyone in the tri-cities-moses lake area? If so, do you have any fertile hatching eggs? Im looking for some different breeds than what I have to hatch out. I ordered some from here on BYC but they came from virginia, and so far none are developing but one (out of 12).
