Hello fellow Washintonians! I didn't have any luck getting a reply to my post in the duck group, but I'm really in need of some advice and hoping one of you can maybe help... Here is most of my other post, with some edits since it's now the end of the day and the house is as hot as it's going to get.

We've had a pair ducks for a few years, but this is the first time we've let Lady Duck go broody (it was sorta by accident). The short version of this painful experience is that we've lost the eggs one by one until now when there is only one live egg left. I have pulled three dead, trampled, nearly hatched ducklings out of the nest in the past couple of days and I feel like I have to give this one a chance since she doesn't seem to know what to do when they start to come out. I *really* wanted to let her just do her thing and not interfere - we didn't even candle them or touch them the past 3 1/2 weeks - only peeked in when she got up for a snack and bath.

The duckling is pipping.

We don't have any of the right equipment, so right now I have it in my tiny "greenhouse" that I use for starting seeds with a heating pad under the glass and the egg on top of a damp kitchen towel. The thermometer/hydrometer reads 80 degrees/90% humidity. The egg feels slightly cooler than when I pulled it out of the nest, but I can still hear/feel tap-tap-tapping. I turned the heating pad up one click. There hasn't been much visible progress during the day, though. I've not messed with it at all, other than to just lift it to feel the temperature a few minutes ago and to listen for taps. Since the heating pad auto-shuts off I'm going to turn on the heated floor in the laundry room to keep it warm over night. I didn't want it running all day, though. I should probably do that now so it'll stabilize before we go to bed.

Did I do the right thing?? I put two chicken eggs (from the store) in the nest when I took out this egg this morning, so she is still sitting. I can probably put this one back. My hope is that I can sneak the hatched duck back in there for her to raise if it makes it. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Wendi

Wendi It is possible that it will hatch. TomatoLady hatch a chick using one of those black plant trays and a heating pad. I have a question about the humidity being that high, but I don't know anything about hatching duck eggs. It is a very good sign that the duckling is still making noises, and it sounds like it has a much better chance in the house with you.

How hot is it?

Last weeks we had 5 days straight of above 100 degrees.

When I posted last it was 104 in the sun. But right across the driveway it was 94 degrees. Its amazing what the difference is between two properties in the same location, when one has trees that provide shade durring the hot hours, and the other doesn't. I did manage to get quite a bit done around the place today though. I worked outside for 20 minutes at a time, then came back inside to cool off, get a drink, and check on the little one while she napped.

I'm just up the hill from Northgate.

I love my neighborhood! I have a group of neighbors I trade with all the time. Soon I hope to be able to add eggs to my trading lol

I found a free brooder but can't find a truck to pick it up

all my truck friends are busy today

(to pick up the brooder I need to take the *other stuff* too figured I'd craidslist that away after I got the brooder)

We (unfortunately) do not have kids (yet) so I'm unsure how parents/kids like the district.
*Which is why we have the cats & chickens. Lol.*

We really love the neighbors though! We even thought about purchasing a house just because we knew we'd be happy here. But alas, my heart yearns for other houses- prettier, better maintained, larger yard (we're on 8,000 sq ft lot).

I've been spending a lot of time on BYC lately (& CL). I e-mailed this ad today offering to be a good home to the banties if she didn't find a purchaser. We'd be so sad if we introduced an unhealthy bird to the flock of 5 so we're looking at ones that are backyard owners that haven't done the shows, auctions, multiple sales that might lead to a higher incidence of contractable diseases.

Of course, I'm happy cuddling up with the 5- though the Brahma & SLW are the best lovers of the group...

I saw that ad on CL too. I wasn't so sure about all the 'other stuff' and hope that if we hatch chicks it would be from one of ours going broody.

How old are your girls?

I have 2 hens 4months and 5 chicks at about 3weeks
I would like the brooder for the quail hatchings.. and more chicks as I want to rasie em and pick the ones i want for my permante flock and sell the others. I like the babies

As for the *Other stuff* I live on a main thoroughfare.. I put stuff out on the street for free and its gone in less then a day, normally within a hour or so.
