Hello everyone,
Just a question... what is the best way you have found to introduce a new hen to the flock?
I am currently using a dog crate (with hen inside) up against the coop fence. But the 2 leghorns are not really willing to share the rooster I think.

and the poor hen can not live in a dog crate forever. plus I have 5 pullets I will be introducing as soon as they can live outside.

who knew that 5 month old hens could be so mean??

Adding any new bird to the flock works really well at night. The birds can't see in the dark, and are too dumb to realize there is a new member by morning. If you still have a meany picking on the new birds, pull out the mean bird and isolate that bird for 24 hrs before putting back in with the flock at night. If that doesn't work, isolate the mean bird for 48 hrs and try again. Keep doing this adding more time if needed but it shouldn't take too long. Eventually, it will realize it is no longer top bird in the pecking order.

Wa4-H...,

A friend and I are tentatively planning on going Thursday. We'll probably go early. I haven't been to any of the fairs in about 15 years. Looking forward to it.

Awesome! Thanks guys I will try that tonight with the new hen and watch it tomorrow in the morning. At what age do they start the meany behavior? I thought my 5monthers would be happy for a new 1 year old hen but I was really wrong they were brutal birdies.

Imp-Hope to meet you then!!! Our birds will be under the Esprit de Corps club banner. Our club is hosting the Prime Time activities for the younger kids out front of the barn from 10:00 - 2:00 that day. :)

Hi you all....

Ive just discovered the Washington Thread. Ive been wanting to talk to people from Washington more because they go thru the the same things as us.

Ive been hatching some eggs and I really wanted some Maran Hens so I can have the dark brown eggs. But luck is not with me, either they dont hatch or Ive gotten roosters.

What I am looking for is some hens or pullets that are any kind of Maran or some EEs that will lay the olive eggs. I just want some color in my eggs.

Im not really interested in hatching any more eggs.

If anybody can help me or direct me into the right direction, I would really appreciate it.......Oh by the way I live in Olympia....

Have a nice evening....

Hi Heather! Is it still warm over there? It's freakin cold over here already!!!

It was much cooler today...I actually had my sweatshirt on a few times....but I still got some sunburn while working on my newest coop! It's now cooled off and VERY windy!

Well I hope there are no fires in your area with the wind. I had my sweats on all day and I'm still cold! Congrats on the new coop! There's never enough coops to go around, is there?!?!
