I have had 3 or 4 ask me for birds in the last few weeks...actually e-mailed me.
I have put up a flyer at the corner grocerie and within 1 day had sold 2 roosters...and 4 chicks.
I have loyal customers who have bought from me last spring waiting for chicks now....
I do not think it unusual to test the waters..Illia !!!
Why not draw some flyers and post them through out town...and waite and see how many calls you get ?
Just say you are out right now but will have more in a week...take a waiting list...I do !
I am already on your list !

So far I have sold every chick I have had for sale and people wanting to know when I have more hatched. I don't think the time of year matters to much but definitely market as ready for spring laying chicks. I had 4 groups of buyers show up within 30 mins of a CL listing and sold all chicks to first 2 buyers. Had to tell last 2 that they would have to wait til next hatching and they were going to watch for the next CL listing. Who knows how many would have showed if I had not pulled the CL listing after 30 mins!

BTW I have Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Coturnix Quails and Serama's in the bator now.

I have a big beautiful strapping Silver Cuckoo Marans rooster all over my big light brahmas...right after that she went in and laid a monster double jumbo egg...the two should produce a nice egg layer, that is what people want.
They care little of the lineage or coloration, they just want breakfast, health, and resiliance.
I intend to hatch everyone we do not eat this winter...and as Greg has stated, by spring...6 months away is not very long at all !! They will be laying, and so sell them at an expanded price !!!
I can keep a whole lot of babies under a light for 6 months until spring, in a very small area, whereas the big hens take up alot of room,,, cost for cost, I believe Greg is correct in his saying, that by spring you have layers to sell, right in the middle of the chicken frenzy of spring.
In the meantime, if anyone buys them NOW, well, then that is OK too !

Thats what I figure as well..
I've got all my big birds in the new coop and am currently using the old coop with a "house box" and a few lights as my big brooder. I keep them inside the house until a good start of feathering then out to the brooder house they go!

*house box = upside down cardboard box with hole in side for door. this creates a wind free warm box with light in it to keep them cozy
then they have other lights in the coop house so they can run around and play.

I agree, and I might add, that I do advertise the birds as what they are, crosses or mutts...and when we have a purebred to sell, it is advertised as such.
One more thing, when I get a big brooder full of babies, no matter their age, I vaccinate them, for at least Newcastle and Marek's.
You do not have to vaccinate a day old chick for Mareks, you can vaccinate a 1 year old for that matter.
The reason you are warned to vaccinate day olds is that everyday they live, they are more exposed to the disease.

Oh Boy am I tired.
Illia, do you have Blue wheaten Ameraucanas or just Marans ?
Maybe I should look....

Just a quick HI!!!!
