I'm so excited!
My sister has a shipment of day old chicks on their way and she's going to give me a couple.

Everyone loves cute baby chicks!
I must admit, I'm new to raising chickens and got my first batch of chicks this last August and I never understood
how people could say they were addicting... but now I know.

I will likely get either 2 RIRs or 1 RIR & 1 EE.
I just gave my sister my beautiful EE roo

but at least I still get to see him (I live in a rural neighborhood and he was getting mighty loud in the mornings).

Hey All! I'm in Vancouver, WA, yes the suburb of that "wierd" city across the river in Oregon... What's it called again? oh yeah, Portland (almost forgot;)). I just started raising chicks. I have 4 little 3 week olds. 2 buff orpingtons (they are so snuggly) and 2 barred rocks (so much spunk!). Love them so far. They are named. My 6 year old named her buff orp "christina" my 4 year old named her barred rock "crystal" My 11 year old named his BR chick "ninja chicken" and My husband named his buff orp "cathy". They are sweet as can be, and I am so excited to have backyard chickens. Have wanted them for years. We decided it would be a better use of our space to take out our HUGe koi pond and put in a small chicken coop and a small greenhouse. (WE're still looking for a coop, since the babes are still in the garage, It's not yet urgent) Thats my story, I'd love to interface with people nearby who also have backyard chickens.

Rainwolf!!! Too cool you scored a new coop ? Do we get to see a photo ?
I was working all day and look what I missed.
I gave Einstein 24 hrs to make the well work or else and he tested and it is 11 gallons per hour, and that is the late dry part of the summer.
I imagin that it will be artesian in the rainy season, as we had several gopher holes spurt water several inches high during the rainy season (just when is the rainy season ???)
We have to re-arrange the well system, so a submersible pumps up to a storage tank, and then we use our above ground pump to presurize a tank which flows in the house we do not have...or a hydrant
lau.gif

We have to find a "dry well system" that shuts off when the well is pumped dry and turns on when it has recovered and is full again..gotta keep looking or can just ask a well driller guy, or well company or ???
I am tuckered out....
Hallerlake, congrates on 2 hens laying...so glad Roz made it !!!

Yes our water is shallow here...we are across the street and ever so slightly just uphill (maybe 15 feet) from the tidal marsh..and there is alot of wells out here that puch up salt water...so far, the water in our little well is getting more and more clear...DH is working on it all day.
So maybe he will get it to work, but for now, the pump we have is too big and sucks the hole dry and runs out of prime and would burn up if we did not shut it off..that is the problem.

but not for long, got work to do and going to the dump ........I love the dump!!!!! So much cool stuff to recycle through !
You would not believe the awesome stuff people toss out, some stuff is not even broken...we have seen stuff like wheel barrels with nothing wrong but a flat tire...and riding mowers that just needed a tune up.
And today I have a shopping list for the dump: Need a fuel tank to hold oil in for our fuel oil stove that is coming.
I have found so many thermopane windows...and door and other stuff to build coops with...
OK, I waite for you to log on and then I am going...tothedump-tothedump-tothedump dump dump!

Hurry up Rainwolf!!! Where are you ?? Hurry up or I gotta go !!

I don't think Owen will be doing chickens again for a while. Maybe when he finishes school, and gets a house. I'm happy the leghorns are laying for you. I don't know about the sex link thing. Does this mean I'm going to be a great grandmother?

I just picked up that long skinny one from wallingford. they took my low offer. and it is now in my backyard waiting to be cleaned and touched up to be my grow out pen for the babies!

Hallerlake - the coop from your son will get reworked now that it will be empty and made a bit easier to clean, gather eggs, etc... Is your boy interested in doing chickens again?

Oh and just a update I now get 2 eggs a day almost every day. These leghorns are egg laying machines!

I've got one of our eggs in the bator and it is growing nicely. buff orp and white leghorn should make a golden sexlink right?
my mom wants to keep the chick no matter cuz it was our first baby from our flock.
