Are you sure that it is a "generic" a** h***? I just found out that the Department of Game and Fish does not want Elk in our area...they sell tags and if the local herd that has started to settle here is not irradicated....the D of G&F go in and do it. The carcasses are then gathered and thrown in a rot pile. The meat is not given out, used, or anyother useful purpose. This really tans my a**. What a waste. I guess mule deer and elk do not mix well. They want to keep the local deer herd healthy (I agree) but they (in my opinion) want to keep it healthy as it pulls tourist (with their $$$$) into our area.

There is a disease gpimg around in eastern WA and I believe it extends to the Blue MTs and Palouse...it is called "wasting disease" and the D of F&G is looking for hunters to volunteer bringing in blood samples and such so scientisits can study the disease.
Whole herds have had to be put down due to the disease and they are trying to prevent the spread.
Apparently the animals that have it waste away to skeletons, despite good browse and whatever supplements the D of F&G have fed the sick animals.
It runs through herds like no body's business, too !
Maybe that is what you saw ?
They have not determined the cause of the disease, so do not want to feed it to humans or pets.
Apparently it has been running through deer and goat herds, I think, which is the fear that it can cross from a deer to a goat, it can cross to domestic goats, and to cows, sheep or horses ?
I would have to look up the thread.
I subscribed to the D of F&G e-mails and that was one a few months ago...I do not know how much progress, if any, they have made at "securing" this disease, where "it" originated from, and if it morphs into a disease that can cross species boundaries.
And no, these Elk here in Grays Habor Co were shot, very sad indeed.

CWD http://www.cwd-info.org/ is happing in a lot of places.

Honestly Chickielady, that is my concern. They're getting boxed like any other chicken, and they are indeed still young and slow growers, but should already be pretty tall. Pips&peeps shipped me some Ameraucanas and gave me a figure of the box size, but even a 5 month old Shamo pullet would have to hunker over to fit in there, which would be bad for their physical health. . . .

But, it is done all the time with Oriental Gamefowl breeders, in fact people highly suggest to NOT sell eggs.

And speaking of eggs, they lay a very round light brown egg. They can fly, sort of, but not very far at all. Even their perches should be at 2 feet high, maximum, to prevent possible injuries. Because they are so upright and their legs are so long, they need a lot of specifics when it comes to raising.

Uhm excuse me but ya might want to put some warm pants over the Thermals. For two reasons one it will make them more effective and also to keep ya from looking too silly in town.

That Elk kill is totally unfirgiveable. I could understand if somebody killed one to feed thier family during these hard times. But to kill 12 no way. Since there was "some" meat removed I really doubt that it was DFW.

Okay, I don't know how you on your side of the Mtns do it....but around here stomping around in your moon boots and ONLY the thermals....that is just stylin'.

Sorry, had to put that in there...now I really sound like a hill billy...and yes, I still have all my teeth.

Thank you for reminding me.

Well, I'm on the west side and thats what I wear to feed my chickens and it is acceptable to wear thermal, sweat pants etc to the local grocery and no one will give you a second look, but thats only on the Key Pen, once you get to the Hoity toity Gig Harbor its a big no no. On the Key Peninsula our phone numbers all start with 884 and we are known as the 884 people in Gig Harbor. We are the local red necks. Whatever.

My favorite winter ensemble is long johns, a long skirt, my sorels (black with furry tops) and usually a sweat shirt or long sleeved T...( I look very pioneer-y) and to heck with anyone who gives us farmers a second look down their hoity toity noses.
Those user freiendly people, in droves in their little houses have absolutely no way to feed themselves or their kids.
They need to kiss the Farmer's ground we walk on !!

Oh my !!! So it is spreading much faster than I thought, wonder where it's origin ?
Can you imagine if it can cross to domestic sheep/goats ?
I know the WA dept of F&G had to shoot 2 entire herds of Mountain goats...300+ a herd as I recall...very sad !!!
But if it kills wild goats, it will kill domestic goats and sheep...and things are getting very scarey.

My fav ensemble is long john bottoms, my black furr topped sorel snow boots, a long granny skirt (sometimes tie dyed) and usually a sweatshirt or long sleeved T shirt, zipper sweat shirt over that, and mitties.

It is getting very windy and stormy here !!!

With the urban sprawl and anti hunting/managing movement of the 80s and 90s overcrowding and competition for food likely helped it spread by concentrating more animals in a smaller place. Its like keeping a 100 chickens in an area for 50 and disease getting started from the stress and over competition that wears on their immune systems. Hopefully it will get managed and they will get back on track. As I understand it there were no elk on this side of the mountains before the Europeans came.

Id like to meet up somewhere, and the Kenmore area is fine with me. Maybe after the holidays when people have more free time and to give enough tim eto plan it to make space on the calendar.

http://www.diyseattle.com/foods/free-range-or-pasture-raised/

Here's an interview about free range versus free pasture.

The local movement is what I started DIYSeattle for, the name may imply that its a Do It Yourself website about making stuff, but its about making change locally. There's no need for us to ship in wheat from back east when we have plenty of it here, or buy chaff to feed our chickens when we have the real deal being grown by our local farmers in our own areas. We have gotten so used to having a pear or apple year round that we dont consider that its being shipped in from Venezuela, or that our apples are sent to China to be made into juice that is concentrated and sold back to us. Why does our apple juice need to come from China when the apples are grown here anyway? There are many of these questions floating around. Id like to hear more about the local movement. Slowly more people are sending me articles they have written about subjects locally, and a few small farms also.
