I think the hens just lay when they want to lay. Our coop has no heat, no lights, and no windows, yet 3 of our girls lay about 5+ eggs each per week, and the other girls are too young.

'Tis cold, sunny, dry, and windy here.

Got some new pics of our free-ranging Shamos and the eggs. . .

The eggs - Nothing too exciting, but a pretty light brown, often having a pink shade to it. Very shiny, too.

what kind of pullets are you looking for?

I'm open to a variety of breeds. They just need to be docile (I have an almost 4 yr old daughter that likes to hang out with the chickens (supervised, of course) and hopefully decent layers.

You and me both. I have a greenhouse, but it is at least half the size I need and would use. If I was smart I would quadruple the size. I also want heat and a auto-watering system in it. I now need to build some raised beds, but I am still uncertain that I have enough sunlight in my yard for vegetables.

DH mentioned that it is possible for the quotes to be for different things. The Green Car could be quoting for just the parts and the Dealer for everything needed to drive it away. There could also be more parts that have to be replaced than just the engine. It can be difficult to get quotes that are for exactly the same service. They all want to be the service provider, and be the cheapest, and yet there are those that will have hidden costs. Though I would tend to trust a company that specializes in the TDI engines over the dealer. The worst engine I ever bought was from a dealer in Portland. The engine was blowing smoke and chunks on the way out of the service bay. It took months for them to replace it. It burned more oil than the engine that was run out of oil.

Ogress: As I told you, My BIL is a VW repair/rebuilder guy. I just told DH what it was they were quoting you and said that is rediculous. DH is telling me that must be for new wiring and upholstery too...I assured him that from what you are saying this is not so....

DH is going to call BIL just for information to see....but DH thinks that your cost should be more around 1/2 what was quoted to you.

I had to back-trace to find your posts regarding your VW....it was driving DH nuts the amount I told him that you were quoted. He says he has never heard of a block breaking just because it hit water. He just isn't buying it. He is right now, on the phone, talking to his brother. My BIL just made a snide comment regarding Chaplins. He says the block is aluminium and there is no way it cracked driving through 3 inches of water. They are thinking it may have "hydrolicked" and got a hole in it. DH and BIL are still yacking.

I have a pair of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (BLRW) a roo I believe and a pullet - hatched 29Oct10
I also have a splash BBS Maran (Blue/Black/Splash) pullet - 28Nov10
and 1/2 Black Jersey 1/2 Black Star pullet and rooster - 18Sept10
All are hand raised and free ranged in my yard. They don't like to be caught but once in hand they handle really well.

I also will be hatching some more BBS Marans and some Buff Orpington mixes (should be great egg layers) on or just after new years.

I'm sure many people here have pullets for sale as well.
