I used to go to a local bank and get bags and bags of shredded paper.....I used it for housing rats and mice. Perhaps chickens are different but the rats and mice pee and poop so much that it got matted down quickly and didn't dry well so it was just a stinky mess.

From there, go your own way of who to breed to. It will take a few generations to get the males you want though. All the females will thankfully carry both barred genes, but you'll get a lot of males like your original with only one allele, so you'd need to test breed them to see who's got both and who doesn't. (who doesn't will throw non-barred chicks on occasion)

If I'm wrong, and your cockerel has both barred genes, congrats! That will give you a 50/50 of barred and non-barred in the first generation, then bred back to him with a barred female, you get 100% barred Partridge offspring.

Well, I have a "breeding pen" but what I mean are individual runs/pens for each pairing to go in and actually live in for more than a day. My breeding pen is for pairings, which usually last a day at the most, then the two are put back in their places again.


Chickielady - Already made it before. We have a lot of Tinkyada pasta, and YOU need to make some with homemade Cottage Cheese straight from a goat!

And I have an ice cream maker that you freeze the bottom part, add the makings and hit the ON button...YUM...like FRESH extra creamy goat blueberry ice cream.
For those of you that are not familiar with goat's milk, the cream will not seperate as in cow's milk...and so it is soooo creamy !!!

Whatever you do, do not get "meyenburger" goats milk from the store, especially the eveaporated type as it tastes horrid compared to fresh.
Now I am making lasagna and want goat ice cream.

Well, I am learning, and I like the chocolate color, I really do, I was actually wondering if they have that chocolate gene that is so illusive here in the USA ? Do you think they have it ?
Like breed them to B/R Cochins or orps ??

I wish I had an Ice Cream Maker. Oooh man to make my own icecream from our super-rich milk. . . Dream on, self. We're hopefully getting one this summer though.
