It is a Fire Eel. Fire eels are not true eels, but I know that they get classified in that group for some reason. Nessy's mouth and nose is shaped differently from a true eel's. I have a number of fresh water fish that eat meat. In fact this just reminded me that I need to call the butcher and ask if they have any beef heart. I know that Polly really liked the turkey heart that I cut into small pieces. I only feed them meat every other day. Nessy is getting to large for the tank. I don't know what I am going to do about that. It is hard to think about spending a 1000.00 or more on a larger tank, for an eel that was less than 10.00 when I bought it. I really need to watch craigslist ads for a good deal on a bigger tank. I just don't know where I would put a bigger tank that seems to be a bit of a problem around here.

Nope no Duckies for me! I tried ducks, I'm just not set up for them, plus my husband didnt like the Scovies to much. Yes I know these arent scovies, but they still make a ducky mess. lol I do however want to see pictures!

My DH has 1 more month before I buy myself an incubator!!! Im sick and tired of waiting any longer than that.

OK, I'm going to start counting. Didn't you say a while back that you were going to do that for your birthday?

Yes!

As a matter of fact I did. But I wound up bringing home a horse instead.

What is that monsterous white thing in the 1st picture? Is that a large dog or a small horse?

Nope that is a small polar bear.

Not really that is just Puppy. He is a Komondor. He will be 12 on February 9th. He spends a lot of time sleeping these days. Well except for when the nasty little dogs are teasing him. I have 4 adult Yorkies, and the 2 younger boys love to mess with the big dogs head. They make him cry fairly often. I have 2 newborn pups that will join the ranks of the big dog teasers in the next couple of weeks. About the time the pups learn to toddle around, is about the time they figure out that they can make the big dog cry. Puppy is such a tender hearted dog. His favorite things to do is go shopping and get talked about. He is a horrible Komondor, but a wonderful dog.

I looked for the thickest part of my lawn yesterday and rolled the Eglu Omelet and run out there for the girls to enjoy the grass. The weather was horrid: high winds, torrential rains. I covered the run with weighted tarps that I bungeed down. Since it is on a slope, I figured the water would just run through unlike the flat area that I built up with several inches of bark. Wrong! The girls ate everything green in less than 24 hours, roots and all, leaving the dirt full of little holes that pooled water and turned the dirt to 4" thick mud. Sticky mud that steals pacboots when you step in it and try to get your foot back. I don't understand the process behing this mud genesis. It should not be so thick. When I dig in fair weather to plant anything, the topsoil is at most an inch thick, and then I hit gravel. That mud sure expands a lot in this weather! In my raised beds, where I have built up the topsoil, it sinks through the gravel and washes away, so I am always replenishing it. Here where I don't want the topsoil, it multiplies!

The job is more of a let down than I expected as well ... I was expecting 20-30 hours per week in the tax office. It will likely be less than 10!!!! Slow weeks will be zero! I found out that 3 people were hired to cover a 26 hour per week position! Good Grief! I wish I had known that when I applied! I'd be better off buying more hens and selling the eggs; aint gonna make more than $20 per week anyways after taxes are paid.

Not good for my shopping list either. I picked out the seeds I want from Uprising Seeds; $130.20! (and I still need more beans, and would like to try melon as well)I have not submitted the order yet. What do I eliminate?

JB - I have your Anti-dog. A giant, shaggy black dog who is young and a total pain in the butt, but I lover her. Half german shepherd, half poodle. Shaggy, goofy, sweet, and chews EVERYTHING! I don't think I would ever get a puppy anymore. My other dog is old, she was already a couple years old when we found her. Never chews anything, not even a Kong filled with peanut butter. She's the nicest dog ever, other than she farts all the time, no matter what I feed her.

ducks like water, which when mixed with dirt makes lovely mud, which they like EVEN BETTER!!

Depends on what you consider messy I guess? Chickens scratch in the flower beds, so am constantly sweeping dirt and stuff off the porch... Ducks like to do what we call Drill Billing into the ground, everywhere. They aerate your yard quite well. They eat a lot of slugs. I love my duckies I would miss them terribly if I didn't have them! Did I mention they love slugs?? My flower bed in the chicken yard had the healthiest bee balm EVER. No slugs touched it.

are you on FB? I posted some pictures of the muck the ducks have made in the chicken yard.. It will go away when stuff dries up, but in the meantime it's gross... lol!

I have 5 acres here...the duckles will have their own space and get as poopy and dirty as they want.
Just like the pen of Guineas...man can they drive you insane in a short amount of time...until the Java are big enought o go in their pen, the runner babies will have a place to be in the mud with a built in muck pond.
Probably be dried up by the time they are ready to go out.

Jbear:: show me some good feeder and waterer set ups for duckies...

T-Hi::: Need to give DD a BIG art catalog...will sva eit and give to her when you come down this way again...
ANYONE:: How on earth do you tell a male from female duckling so I can save a black female ??
th.gif

Chickielady is so tired of mucking pens and adding sand and gravel, but boy is it nice when done.

JB::: I would build the cinderblock boxes on that step edge all around the new concrete ! Wow would that ever be nice, and then let the water rise all it wants !!

Jen, that's a pretty tempting offer, and I'm actually considering it. I don't think I'd keep any of them, but let you have them back when you felt they were ready. I checked the Brinsea site - I kind of like the Brinsea Mini-Advance incubator. So let's see - first I get it in my head that I need a coop for hens only, but now I'd like to try hatching out a few babies just for fun. I don't know if this is my response to "Empty Nest" syndrome since my one and only child is enjoying her first year away at college, but it certainly seems I'm trying hard to fill that nest.
Oh well - call me crazy.

BTW - I hope it's okay with Jen to share that I had the pleasure of a F2F meeting with her last week! It was brief - she came to the wine shop on her lunch break to pick up some of those wooden boxes I had posted pics of a week or so ago and we loaded 5 of them in the back of her truck. She's adorable in person, very sweet, and I know we'll see each other again soon. I love that she works so close to me!

Made some roasted root vegetables - made up my mind, I just don't like parsnips. Maybe the chickens will ... hope their eggs won't taste like them.
