And so the adventure begins... DH, his buddy and I took a trip to Home Depot today to get our first load of materials for the coop!
I have printed out plans - I thought to make things easier for the guys AND myself, but of course now they are essentially saying "We don't need no stinking plans" and are commencing to build it how they want, with basic specifications from me.
Since I plan on 6 hens, I was thinking 4X8 hen house raised 2 1/2 feet off the ground, enclosed in an 8X10 covered pen. My husband decided to go 8X12 which is fine. They plan to cover it with a peaked roof, but now my husband is asking me how tall the actual hen house should be from floor to the top, (not including the peaked roof section). I guessed 3 1/2 feet should be tall enough, but he's battling me on that figure. I'll have to look up in some other plans so we have it in black and white, which I thought I was doing when I printed out plans he's decided to ignore!
Let me take a moment to remind myself how fortunate I am that I have a husband who indulges my whims and is willing to work so hard for me, and not to focus on past experiences where home projects become fodder for ridiculous squabbles.
Work for today is finished, but they did set out cement blocks to raise the pen off the ground and I have a measured out footprint of stakes and string, so I can visualize it more clearly. On Monday they plan to set up the framework. DH isn't sure it's big enough now... We'll see - wish us city folk some luck!
