Well, looks like my window for the Monroe show is closing more and more as time goes on.

I'm still really hoping to go, but I'm holding onto my form and money until I know I'm going, or at least have an 85% chance.

Stevenson, now that's a show I'll stop at NOTHING to go to!

Pips&peeps, if I won't attend, I'll want eggs from you.

You have to learn!
from what I hear, that brinsnea will do all the thinking for you.

And the entire reason I chose Brinsea is because I was told by MANY peeps that its "Stupid Proof!" And boy do I ever need that! I can be so absent minded at times, its almost like being stuck with baby brain, you know the ditzyness that comes with being pregers. lol I'm very excited! My other half tried talking me into waiting 3 more days, I was like "nuh uh, not gonna happen." And gave him just a blank gaze. The way I see it is, if I had agreed to wait even 3 days longer, then it just wasn't going to happen. I think over the past month I have earned at least this!

Question for you all - We are just about done with our new coop and covered run. I painted it over the weekend, DH put down some linoleum and I just bought some trim to cover the gap between the linoleum and the wall. Oh, and after seeing CL's poo boards (thans for the pics!) I bought some shelf brackets. I have a big bag of pine shavings to scatter in the coop. I'm thrilled they girls will have a safe, dry place to roam when we are not home, and when the weather sucks. The coop is a walk-in 10'x12' with lots of windows, and the run in 10'X22'. No more days like today ... we left the Eglu Cube run door open in a portable pen made with 85 feet of net fence. All the girls flew over the fence while we were out shopping and had wandered away. DD was hysterical when we got home, she assumed the worst, but they were all fine, scratching away in the blueberry field at the other end of our property Here are my questions:

1) What do you put in your nest boxes, hay (what type)? Straw? shredded paper? pine shavings?

2) Do you hang your feeder and waterer in the coop, in the run, or both? With the Eglu, these are in the run as the coop is rather small. Now I have a big coop, and think that may be a nice place to have them. This way we can sleep in a little longer some mornings instead of always getting up at the crack of dawn to let them out.

3) I bought a bag of DE and a kitty litter box. Anything else needed for a dustbath? I feel sorry for them trying to take care of this in my muddy yard.

I use the pine shavings in the nest box as well as on the floor. I have heard that straw can harbor mites as they like to hide in the shaft of the straw.

We keep the feeder in the coop so there is no chance for the feed to get wet. Wet food = moldy feed = sick chickens. The water we keep out in the run. Too much moisture can be bad in the coop and they can make a mess of it + it constantly fills up with the shavings.

I'd add sand to the dust bath, wood ash if you have it. And I'd probably go ahead and add some poultry dust for mites into it as well even though the DE is supposed to help with that. You bought food grade DE, correct? In fact, I'd do mostly sand and then a bit of each of the other things. The DE is not good for the lungs when it is inhaled.

Have fun moving the birdies in! And this post is useless without pics!!!

Thanks 4-H!

I still have to take pics. I'll do that when I move the birds in hopefully tomorrow. The coop is a little over the top. DH was not happy when I told him how much it was! ooops! (He found out because I had to transfer $ from the credit card to the bank account to pay for it .... ooops). I did go out and get a job when I saw how much it was going to be, but my job does not pay much, and I only work part time.

I'm not sure what grade DE I bought... whatever they had at ACE. I better check...(It comes in a bright yellow bag).

Illia, I can seat you on a bale of straw in the back of my van, but it is not legal or safe to do so...I will get DH to build a seat for you that bolts down ?
And I am not sure where the chicks come from, why ?
What is GFF?
These are Boldogkennels's birds I am a rent-a-bator and just hatching them for her.
You have to ask her where they came from..but I do know she rescues birds caught from fighting, and pitbulldogs as well..she has a web site, google Boldogkennels..she lectures police departments, etc and save birds and dog that were stuck in fighting.
And she is shy and lurks and will not get on here and post..Diane if you are lurking, step up & post!!

Oh, I see when Bolddogkennel is around.

GFF - Greenfire Farms. I'm just saying, often when people get from them, it isn't about the love of the gamefowl, it's about paying big money for a fad color or breed.

From Bolddogkennel though I'd trust them not being from there.
