I cut the holes out and then used a metal file to smooth the edges, they aren't perfect, but they are relatively smooth and I made sure that there weren't any sharp, poky peices of plastic that the girls could hurt themselves on.
I'm going to have to make me some of those. The feeders that come with the eglu are great - they can't throw the feed from them, but when the weather gets nice again, I am going to use the eglu and the new coop, so I will need more feeders. I got a couple of those galvanized feeders from someone, but my birds don't like them. The feeders and waterer are very much like the waterers that CL makes. The waterer comes in 2 wall-mount styles, one that is hung low with round openings at the top for them to drink out of, and the other hangs high with nipple waterers at the bottom. Usually I prefer the nipple waterer, but the nipples tend to freeze in this weather, even if the rest of the water is not frozen. Unlike the rabbit waterer that the birds prefer, the nipple waterer does not drip. One of my EE's will jumps up on the high waterer and drinks from the top ... she always has to be different!
The feeders look like pac-man, or
(as someone pointed out when I joined). They can't make a mess of their food.

Yes. And unless you cover the entire run with 1/4" hardware cloth, you will have the wild birds in there eating it too, and they can spread diseases to your birds.
Hmm... That's what I was afraid of. The coop is just a few feet from the garage door which is connected to the house. I'd really like to avoid having rodents that close to the house. I'm guessing our cats are actually freeloaders and not willing to fulfill their job description. So the treadle feeder is sounding like a better idea for our situation now. I've seen the video where the rat steps onto the pedal and the feeder doesn't open for him. And I know we have wood rats around here - I've seen them skittering across the driveway at night. DH has found one dead in our backyard, but I'm not sure who actually killed it. Dog or cat - no one has stepped up to take credit.
The coop is an all in one - so yes, all area underneath the hen house and under the covered run will be covered in 1/4" hardware cloth. That was a requirement for me in my plans. Trying to keep out as many intruders as possible.
Thank you!
I accepted "I don't like it" after they tried it. They had to TRY everything. With their multicultural background, my kids will eat some unusual things.

I too am a member of the clean plate club. I have the same kind of eating problems. I also make my kids try some of everything....or if I know it is something that is not their favorite...then I only give them a small amount. But if they pull the "I'm full" card....there is no seconds of something else or dessert....remember...you were full.
It's above freezing here today, but that wind is cold. I've got a bunch of baby trees to get in the ground, plus the peony I bought yesterday. The Bletilla I bought yesterday, and the bird of paradise that came in the mail yesterday need to be planted in pots. Not to mention it's coop cleaning day. I guess I'll just have to bundle up.
Come on over and see the north Seattle folks any time. We're just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Edmonds ferry.

Must wait, must wait, must wait... lol I can do it, I promiss I will do my best to not get on your nerves. lol
No sooner than the 12th. Please time, hurry up and pass already!
I really want to go to the show. Anyway I could wait until then and get the chicks from you there? Then I can meet everyone who is attending. And give myself a little informal poultry schooling? Would this work, or would it be better for me to come down before hand?
Ugg! Stupid crows are chasing my girls off their feed!!! They are IN my coop!!! Well not actually IN the coop, but in the fully covered run... Crows are so insanely smart, they drive me nutts...
I have seed I haven't planted yet. I was waiting until April.

Oh really? Well when you have the time, and you find it, please do email that to me. Wonder if these are the same hawthorns... I know that these are a hybrid cross, and have never seen berries on them. But then again these trees are HUGE and I dont get to see what grows up at the tops. lol Maby the berries that the article mentions are actually the budlets before they bloom? before the blossoms open they look like little white cherry clusters. Very pretty, and heavenly to smell when in bloom.
If I remember correctly, I was told by the Dr.s that my heart would never shrink back to its original size. So it will always be a couple cm larger than it is supposed to be... But I am willing to try holistic remedies, even though the Dr.s say it wont work.
Does anyone have any red clover growing? I really want to grow some this year, as it is FULL of anioxidents, and helps rid the body of certain nasty cells that I dont want to think about... Anyone? Or does anyone know a good nursery where I can get a good amount of Red clover?
I bought my seed at Sky Nursery in Shoreline. Would you like me to mail you some?
