So here I go again, Im getting some eggs that are olive colored and are from BBS orps. The lady said she wants me to keep the hens and do a study on them to see one how they hatch and two what color the eggs are from them... We will see.. Oh my husband is going to be very mad at me..

They'd be your birds I don't care what you'd do with them after they hatched.

I really love your Light Sussex...put me on that list for testing eggs....gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

You guys are going to so get me in so much trouble. The chicken math is really adding up. I was looking out in my "chicken space" and I figure if I am creative I can get 2 more good size runs...or 4 smaller ones for maybe 3 or 4 birds. Or if I expand over into the side property (which at this point is my parents) I could go GINORMOUS. Of course the way I would want to do it would cost GINORMOUS dollars too. Oh....you people are so naughty.

Tell me the sense of this. DH spent all day yesterday sitting in front of the TV. Did absolutely nothing except once went to the bedroom for a nap. Got up this morning and did the same thing. Watched TV all day. So I'm out in the greenhouse planting flats of seeds and he texts me and says, "tired of sitting around. Going to a Movie' ! Isn't going to a movie still sitting around? Well, at least he's out of the house. It was depressing.

Okanogan HS' wood shop makes really nice sheds, too. They paint them to match your house and do the roofing to match too (ours is metal) and deliver them. I think ours was like $750.00 painted, delivered, etc. We bought the paint & roofing. It would make a sweet coop and could be divided to house multiple breeds.

Oh and yes...I can put you on my list for LS eggs.

LOL...my 15 yo DS has been telling me this too. (regarding the shed). LOL. My coop right now is a little larger than 8 x 8...I think I could divide that in 1/2 couldn't I? and make 2 spaces for them to roost and nest. I think that the space right now is not being used to its full potential.

Well since the fixing of this thread caused my more recent posts to disappear, I'll post it again. . .


The Sussex hens I got from Cowgirlgrace. (at least twice the size of my largest, the Marans hens)

Cowgirlgrace, I do believe the broody hen recently started, as for one, her comb is just as red and bright as the other girl's, meaning she's either ending or just beginning.

With today's insane winds and rain, she finally found her way out of the run, (somehow fitted that enormous body through the small holes in the fencing - the Marans can barely fit through, but her, - wish I saw how she did it) and then couldn't figure out a way back in once the rains were unbearable, so she just stood there, didn't move a muscle, until I went out to try and fetch her. She made her typical cluck cluck broody sounds and tried avoiding me this way and that, but I finally decided to just herd her into the goat barn. There, she was fine. And HUUUGE amongst the other girls. Yes, that's right, she's not in quarantine.

I didn't have a spot, and we figured, we haven't had any issues in the past, so. . . Let's try it.

What is so funny is that of the other hens I've introduced to the flock, they're always scared, skittish, and bullied to start. . . Not these girls.

My Buff Ameraucana pullet tried fighting her, but that lasted a split second. The Sussex hen didn't even budge, and the Ameraucana automatically gave up. She let out one lashing, then turned to run.


Otherwise in today's news, I planted 12 varieties of Melons/Watermelons and 12 varieties of Squash, both winter and summer types. I can't wait til they start growing!! I've got some very rare, fragrant, and delicious as well as exotic looking old varieties in there.

Oh, and my year old pepper plants are beginning to now bear up to 13 flowers per plant. I'm going to see peppers any week now!! So excited!! The big thrill, really, is that I have little clue as to what peppers I'll get from the plants. All three are the same, I know that. All three are heirloom, I know that. Beyond that, I have a list of about 12 possibilities.

That's how my coop started out, an 8 x 8 divided down the middle with two runs. Now it's an 8 x 16 with six runs and a bunch of bantam bins.
