There has been some talk on the forum, a few months ago, about using tobacco leaves as a bug deterrent.

I remember as a kid that people planted garlic in a row around the veg garden. It was supposed to keep out bugs from getting into the garden. Don't know if garlic could be used in the chicken application.

Russ-'course if I ate 40 garlic chicken it'd keep bugs, pets and people away.

Well, how about those of us that cant go to the Stevenson show meet up at Federal Way and have our own party?
The SecretCult can meet Sat. morning. If it rains, we'll all head on over to the Commons and if it is really nice out, we'll go to Dash Piont for a Picnic.
We'll confirm the place on Friday either or...after consulting the weather channel. We can bring some food to share...and some birds to trade.

that sounds like a winner --- the price of motel, or the price of gas to drive the RV down to Stevenson, is a bit of a strain on the budget; nor do I want to drive the compact down and back every day from out in the country east of Olympia

Federal Way area is do-able --- it's a bit over an hour's drive (country roads, strip malls, and too much traffic)

I would also like to know this for future reference.

If I am not mistaken, and anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but you can usually coop in before 9 AM on Saturday... ? did this change this year because of the largeness of the show? I don't have my show catalog at work with me...

Well, that would help. I could go down on Fri with birds if someone who couldn't make it Fri wanted to partner with me and bring birds back on Sunday? I'm going to write to the club hosting it and see what they say.

She did treat her birds with garlic water once per month and had an herb spray that she sprayed them down with a few times a week. She has used cedar shaving for years with no trouble.

I have read the catalog with a fine tooth comb.... I only found one contact for the club, so I have emailed them and asked them to reply as quickily as they can since I need to get entries in. I am SUPER excited to see that there is a talk on - LF OEG!!!!!!! Yeah! I asked if I could coop in on Sat. It sounds like security is SUPER tight, and it says no one would be allowed to touch anyone else's bird... so, I had to ask them if a person can coop out on Sat as it sounds like they would not allow anyone else to bring my birds back up I5 on Sunday.

Oh, the drama of it all! Well, I'm off to dub one of my birds in case I can enter!!!!

I have the freshest chickens in town. I throw herbs like rosemary and lavender into with the bedding. It's supposed to prevent mites and lice. Citrus oils kill fleas and things. Mix in some lemon zest?

Yea, those are what she used too. I was also wondering about sand in the coop and what bearing that has on harboring bugs? Do bugs avoid or careless about being in sand?
