The females aren't that bad....plus, they are super-quiet, very hardy and make great mothers. I have had one duck now for almost 8 years (she will be 8 in August) and she's so funny. She's the boss of all the other ducks and still going strong at her age. She still lays and still sets. She hatched me out goslings and ducklings last summer and two years ago, incubated an amazing batch of 19 ducklings!

That is scary looking to me...looks too much like a chicken waiting to pounce...

I know she is scheming..and all the red and bumpy parts, just freaky...only to me...

And good morning to all. I see it's raining again already. The coop is so close to being finished this is a little frustrating. I'm pretty excited though - DH and I are headed to a free workshop put on by City of Tacoma Public Works. The workshop is on "Starting Seeds & Garden Planning". Pretty basic stuff for most of you I know, but I've never had much of any kind of gardens and we wanted to try and grow a few things this year. I'll have to figure out a way to block it for when the girls are out free ranging, but I am also planning on planting some special boxes just for chicken goodies. I'm hoping that my plan to cover it with screening and just let them eat the vegetation growing through the top will work.
The city will be continuing their free workshops all spring, on composting/worm bins (also new to me), soil prep and planting seedlings, rain garden how-to, pest management, spring cleaning with greener cleaners, and even Backyard Chickens!
This is all pretty exciting stuff for me. And best of all it's free!

So, this is a little premature, but here's the coop so far. Please ignore the mess. Hopefully, we're just a few days and a few tension filled "discussions" from it being finished. I did tell DH I truly appreciate how hard he's been working to get the project finished. He is a good guy with the very best intentions and he's put in some LONG hours so far!

Yep! They love my room. . . The moment I put them on their perch in here, they start preening for about an hour.

Nice coop so far!

Actually no.
I only love SUPER RUNNER DUCKS!!

And not all colours....just cumberland blue,cinnamon, white, silver, lavender and maybe buff.
Not black shiny ones and not mallard looking ones and not shiny black ones. Did I mention shiny black ones?

And I like female chocolate ones too...

I can't imagine the wax in either of them is very healthy to breathe in, but I can't find anyone who makes them from Beeswax which smells wonderful to me.

So maybe thats what I can do is make some with more beeswax and less frag.. Great Idea

OOh, that is one big coop. If you put a clear plastic roof with a retractable shade, it would be a perfect green house/ coop.

Did you bring stuff to the monroe show?? I totally missed that.
Do you also have goat's milk to sell?
I was curious about goat's milk. Yummy?

Chicken Flambe! My brother is a California Highway Patrol Officer. Decades ago he worked a horrific accident on Pacheco Pass. A tanker truck carrying tequila drifted over the center line and crashed head on into another truck carrying cages of chickens. The woman driving the chickens was killed and the cages for chickens fell from the truck, many of the cages opened up and many birds got away, then the vehicles burst into flame, and buring chickens were running into the hills and setting them ablaze too. My brother told me that even a few years later, he would see chickens scarred from the fire running around there.

Oh my gosh that is bad. poor little chickens... That would be a good scary story I bet attack of the chickens in the hills
