Not black shiny ones and not mallard looking ones and not shiny black ones. Did I mention shiny black ones?

Your silly and picky too!

Actually I'm just chicken fobic and am terrified of anything that resembles a dark shiny rooster with those sharp beaks and big red blobs...and am super afraid of wet chickens...any colour, shiny or not.
But I am being desensitised by you BYC enablers. That being said, I wouldn't touch one with a pole just yet.

They can be behind a secure cage & I can walk near them now...blood pressure slightly raised, but no heart failure yet.
But you'll see me leave the room in a hurry if they chickens are not confined.

Spiders, lizards, creepy crawlies don't bother me a bit. well except for the super fanged crabby crotch bug. That is a whole other topic.

Good Morning Illia! Did you and your Tolbunt boys get a good night's sleep?

And good morning to all. I see it's raining again already. The coop is so close to being finished this is a little frustrating. I'm pretty excited though - DH and I are headed to a free workshop put on by City of Tacoma Public Works. The workshop is on "Starting Seeds & Garden Planning". Pretty basic stuff for most of you I know, but I've never had much of any kind of gardens and we wanted to try and grow a few things this year. I'll have to figure out a way to block it for when the girls are out free ranging, but I am also planning on planting some special boxes just for chicken goodies. I'm hoping that my plan to cover it with screening and just let them eat the vegetation growing through the top will work.
The city will be continuing their free workshops all spring, on composting/worm bins (also new to me), soil prep and planting seedlings, rain garden how-to, pest management, spring cleaning with greener cleaners, and even Backyard Chickens!
This is all pretty exciting stuff for me. And best of all it's free!

So, this is a little premature, but here's the coop so far. Please ignore the mess. Hopefully, we're just a few days and a few tension filled "discussions" from it being finished. I did tell DH I truly appreciate how hard he's been working to get the project finished. He is a good guy with the very best intentions and he's put in some LONG hours so far!

Do they come unannounced like a restaurant check?
I would hate that.
My chihuahua & corgi are actually attack dogs in disguise. MEAN junk yard dogs in their past lives.

Yes, its not like I would be doing something wrong but I like it when people call first.
A few years back I was at the store and my son was home and a man just showed up to look at the goats. My son was in the pool and say the guy walking around. So Z ( son) asked him to leave and call first... Thats when I took my address off the net for people to know where I lived.. Gave me the creeps..

You know, years ago when I was doing my driving test, the tester was scared of bees and one got into my very very small civic 2 mins. into the test.
This tester lady jumped up & down so hard I think she made a dent in the ceiling.
She was screaming & smashing the dashboard with her clip board so violently I think she might have broken the engine.
Well, needless to say, we never left the parking lot & I passed.

First I want to thank you for taking the time to share you knowledge. It is invaluable. After 40 yrs of hatching, I see you as hatch master!
I use a separate incubator and hatcher. For the bantys, I did not open the hatcher but from pip to zip was 3-4 times longer than the Marans. Seemed odd to me but since I am new to this I was not sure why it was taking so long. I was also told that from pip to zip can be up to 12-24 hrs so I was trying to be patient and let them do their thing. I started helping when it had gone over 12 hrs from pip with no progress. I mist warm water into the hatcher snatch out an egg, wrap it into warm wet but not dripping washcloth and proceed to figure out why it is not progressing. In each case the chick was still alive but wrapped. The thermostat flicks the light on and off to regulate temps but there is a 7w night light that glows all time.
I read the article by Bill Worrell about dry incubating. Seemed logical. But now I am doubting everything I have learned up to this point.(which really isn't much)
There are so many differing methods, it's hard to keep it all straight! Maybe you should write a guide for us newbies. Incubating for dummies, I mean newbies by Chickielady. (Like you have nothing better to do with your time, right. Ha) but I would definitely buy one!
I'm not going to get discouraged, at least not yet.
Thanks again for your wise words, they are very helpful and appreciated!

I was actually going to go to the book store and see if there was an "Incubating for Dumbies"....in the group of Books for Dumbies. I thought it was a good idea....DH rolled his eyes.

RW : Called Scott, he doesn't have a mix for breeding ducks.
So I'm off to Monroe F & F. Bummer.
I need some local honey anyways.
