yesterday morning i had collected over 2 dozen eggs.... mom told me last night she collected another 19 eggs.... but non were in the new nesting boxes.... despite seeing them going into them happily..... maybe it will take a little while to get them used to it.... 15 slots first lined with wood shavings and then stuffed with straw. i have pics posted on my FB album.

I have a co-worker that is wanting some birds for her young kids to work with in 4-H and something to take to the fair every year. She's still "shopping" but didn't want the LS when I told her they have to be kept clean.

She's very novice and still learning but I suggested Orps and have her a few sites to check out....so maybe she'll be interested.

Are the orps a good starter chicken for a kid? DD still is talking about having her own birds. We are still studying.

If she just hatched them than yes I think you can do it. But I think if you do it do it at night so she just wakes up to them under her. Make sure the chicks are very young..

DD picked out 3 sex-links...I know these are just "cross-breds", right? They did not have much to choose from and these were a pretty buff/red color that she liked. There was of course no convincing her of anything else...she is 10 after all and knows everything. She wants to spend the day "watching them". There is a cartoon out there that is something about having a pet and "loving it, and stroking it, and hugging it, and I will hug it and squeeze it and.....etc, etc, etc". Hopefully the babies make it until tonight so I can stick them under the momma. DD has been warned about "man-handling" them and that they could die. So hopefully, she will listen while I am out planting taters and onions.

4Cats I think you re talkin gabout the Warner Bros cartoon that was making fun of the book Of Mice and Men. And call him George...

I have quail hatching in the Dart Bator that I built. Its a knock off of the sportsman, or at least I just made it the same dimensions as them.

To Zgoatlady, I sent you photos of our ladies and Luna's chicks. Not sure how to add them to my message on the forum.

they are pretty docile birds but the bbs are huge. I have seen some kids packing them around though. could maybe get some opinions form others who have used them for juniors, 4H. if she chose to go with orps and I had something that would fit the bill, she is welcome to it.
