Must be, I had a metal one..and was like a shoe box with a lid that opened....the birds made a heck of a mess out of it, and it was outrageously expensive.
Even a lip...if it has a hole bigger than their heads, they sweep feed out, messy birds.
I think the young ones are the messiest.
Yeah I am not sure...I suppose if they tried really really hard they could, but the lip is like 1.5" all around and I have never had any issues with it. Maybe the angle on the feeder you had was too sharp so the feed was all they way at the top. Then maybe when they moved the feed around with their head it would fly out...I am not sure, it's too bad it did not work for you, I really enjoy it, and it has solved a lot of problems for us.
