Good for you! That's on my to-do list this summer and I'm dreading it. But I know it's going to be SO nice when it's done. We just have dirt in the run now which has been staying relatively dry under the roofed run thank goodness, but I'm looking forward to getting the sand in there. Then I plan to finish around the coop with paving stones, planters with chicken salad bar and maybe hang a planter or two from the coop run. Let us know how it turns out!

The sand for me is not so much for keeping dry, but for keeping the girls safer from Cocci. My ground is evidently "soaked" in it. I have lots of sparrows, etc. I am paranoid everytime someone looks a little runny stool or is lying down and relaxing or has fluffed up some. I lost 7 birds last year to this awful affliction....I have read everything under the moon and many many people on here helped me to prevent and get rid of the problem. Sand in helps to prevent this.

I swear I'm in perimenopause. I have 10 of the 11 main symptoms and yet because of my age they don't want to listen to those symptoms. It's very frustrating! We are in a small town and have a lot of the same "problems" that RFF is going through. What do you have to do to get someone to listen?

I was very young when I started can you say 32. All your Dr has to do is take a blood test and it will tell you. Go ask for it,life is so much nicer once you know.

Unfortunately, my Dr was not open minded enough and argued with me and would not do a blood test, because she felt I was to young (40). I had to DEMAND a CBC and they finally did it...but it came back witin normal limits - like my new provider told me - doesn't mean it is within MY normal limits. And actually the best test is a saliva test (spit in a test tube - yep, that was fun).

Quik question on sand in the runs...

How deep is your sand? Whats the best depth for chicken runs?

I was doing mine as deep as I could 4-6 inches. Rff - want to peep in on this one?

Mine is about 6" deep. It lasts about two years before I have to shovel more in.

Well I am back. I had a different U/S person this time--a man. He was very serious and cold. He said he was going to get a bunch of shots of the heart & head. He then turned the monitor away from me for about 10 minutes and I could hear hi...m saving certain images. I tried to talk to him and he acted really busy and inconvenienced that I was talking while he was working. So I shut up.

The EIF's are still there.

He said there are four chambers of the heart and then pointed out the bright spots in the heart. I got to see them myself. They looked like little white dots within the black of the heart. He said everything else "looks pretty normal."

PRETTY, normal?

My DH asked him how often he sees heart things like this. He said about 50% of the time there will be "artifacts" on the heart.
After a while, he turned the monitor towards me so I could see the baby. I got to see her hands and toes. She's still a girl--a MUCH more definite crotch shot this time! lol Her heartbeat was 142bpm. I only got to see the baby for about 3 minutes.

Then he handed DH three pics and said they will look at them (the ultrasounds) today and someone will be getting back to me within a few days. Which since it's Thursday will probably mean next week?

DH said he saw the heart well, fingers/toes, head, face, etc. He said it looked "like a baby." After I got to see the pics, I have to agree. Cute profile...doesn't look like Downs....but who knows. Now I have to just wait some more.

DH used the scanner last and it's set for PDF files so the u/s pics aren't coming up. sad I will keep trying.

working on my "Statement of Intent" for my internship paperwork... there is so much this college wants us to do to get approval....
I have one last question that i am a bit hung up on on how to answer. anyone got ideas?

An ability to use appropriate techniques, skills, and agricultural knowledge to address real world problems.

I will be out in the field doing research on different weed control methods that can be approved as Organic practices.

I have already previously addressed that there is a lack of ways to control weeds in an approved Organic method blah...blah...

So maybe someone who hasnt been trying to work on this for an hour has a fresher perspective on how to answer this.

Continuing with the sand in run topic...I was told that the regular construction sand has too high of levels of silica and can cause respiratory symptoms in people or animals who are scratching around in it. So I bought a massive amount of Play Sand when installing my run. I'm putting together a second run, and am wondering if those of you who use sand used the construction sand or feel strongly about buying bags. It's a pain in the butt to schlep 50 pound bags of play sand in and out of a cart at Home Depot, and then to my run.

Just curious.
