Born in Wisconsin, but we moved to Fl, 50 miles from Orlando!, when I was 6, so hitting the grinder in June, July and August was hot but bearable. It was leaving Fl in summer to go to GLAKES, Ill in SEP that got me, lol!

That was '74, and there were NO dress uniform slacks for women. One frosty morning we were in formation and all us women were obviously uncomfortable. The Class Comm asked me what the problem was and I told him he "couldn't possibly understand until he stood at parade rest in heels and a skirt, um, SIR!"

Took him a second to figure it out, he blushed and put us at attention!

Well at least you have 12 I guess. I haven't candled again since I got too inquisitive and candled mid week last week so I don't have a count yet. I have been checking my water level every third day and keeping that 3/4 full. Temperature is holding. In anticipation of chicks, I picked up chick starter when I made my trip out to Del's today to get galvanized feed cans. I'm optimistic, but I'm not counting my chicks yet...

I have been perusing the auctions to see what's available or considering what local friends have. I'm not certain I should be considering another hatch after this one, but it might be too tempting!

On my last hatch I only candles twice, day 8 and day 18. But these eggs, were SO messed up that Im glad Ive been checking them. I had one nasty rotten eggs yesterday, and now that I know the remaining 12 are developing, I will just give them the sniff test every three days until day 18. Then I will candle one last time, before putting them into lock down. Im not counting my chicks yet, just counting viable eggs. lol I will give everyone the final total when they hatch out.

Though so far it has been nothing but frustration.

Im thinkin that she will probably still be growing come her fifth year. lol She's gonna be a big girl, so I best get over my fear of hights on horseback. lol Im used to riding on 15h horses, last time I rode on a 16+ horse, he tossed me like a wet rag. I about hit the cement, but was able to control my fall enough to land in the mud instead.

Oh jeez! yea that's a long way down!! well for me too, I'm only 5'3! lol

Im 5'11 3/4" so just a tad under 6 foot, and its still a long way down! lol

This morning's craigslist torment although I wouldn't want all five hens, but on the other hand: what nice hens!

There's also two "Ameraucanas"(maybe?)/EEs (probably) for twenty dollars for the pair, not to be sold separately. Both of them the other side of Seattle from me, and the chicken coop still unfinished, alas.

Monday, blah. Also I managed a small sunburn, although the two young ladies who were working with me both look as if they were hit by phasers set on deep fat fry.

Rule #1, It's never the horses fault. Even if it has issues from mishandling, bad temperament and/ or done it many times before. If you know this about a horse and you are trying to train and work through things with it, it's the riders choice to get on the horse. As redreiner said, with horses it's the fight of flight response and most of the time it's flight. It's a survival instinct. You have to learn with each horse where their limits are. I have been thrown many times and the first thing you want to do is blame the stupid horse but when the dust settles you have to ask yourself, what did I do wrong and go from there. If you're not seeing too many stars you can get back on, (which is what you should do, even for a few minutes) or not. It's your choice. Some are really difficult and have too much baggage or just a plain old mean temperament and may never be good for anything but dog food, but it's never the horses fault.

If it's true about Osama, yippee but I don't trust any Government. I probably won't ever totally believe it. How will we, the American people, ever know for sure? Seems we are always getting the wool pulled over our eyes. Government, Politics, just a bunch of sneaky liars. Could even just be a ploy to get votes. Call me cynical but I don't trust a single one of them.

Here here! and Aye Aye on all accounts! I agree in both cases horses and politics, I know this is a chicken forum, but I'm glad we can express some of what we feel here! I want everyone to know how much I appreciate their comments whether I agree with them or not! It's our right!! Look at what is happening in the rest of the world, they wouldn't be able to have the conversations we are holding here! I feel blessed I have found this forum with my fellow Americans and know you are all in my prayers for all that each of you are going through individually! God Bless you ! and God Bless America!!!

I'm not in the market for a mini mule, but I am curious what kind of issues one would have? Like many young girl's I used to dream of having horses, but know now it's not going to happen, (although I do still ask my mother for a pony every birthday. At 54, I till haven't gotten one.) Being a BYCer has not only enlightened me and given me an education in poultry, but made me realize just how MUCH work, horse, or mule, or any kind of livestock owner has to be willing to do to be responsible. I admire you all for doing what you do.

Jackson the mini mule was never halter broke or handled. he was also left intact. mules might be sterile but the testosterone is still there. they are a different animal as it is and an intact mule can be downright viscous. Jackson was left in a pasture with 3 big mares for most of his life and thought he was herd sire. he was also never wormed or had his feet trimmed. when I got him his feet were curled up and they had managed to rope him and cut half of them off before I got him! each foot had 4 or 5 abcess's in them. he could barely walk unless you were trying to catch him...then he could run like hec. you dont even wanna know their excuse for his feet. Anyway I threw some panels up in his pasture, 3 other friends helped, we backed a trailer up to the panels and we made a big sweep and he ran in the pen, looked at us then ran into the trailer. brought him home and had the vet out, cut his feet off, drained the abcess's, wormed him, gave him a shot of antibiotics. the next vet visit I managed to get him tied to a post and we knocked him out and gelded him. he has hated me ever since. He does not lead, does not trust anyone taller than he is, and he paces in his pen. he has issues lol. Jackson has his own page on FB. just search jackson the mini mule.

Prada, you should have her teeth checked. even though young their teeth can still get out of whack. she is ribby to me but not skinny. all are good looking horses,. I love teagan! what a cutie!
Pettec63 your young boy will make someone a nice horse. bet he is happy to have found you!!

I took Prada to the equine dentist last thursday. He checked her out, and said she doesnt need a float. He also checked where she ripped out two teeth a little over a month ago. She's all healed up from that too. No signs of wolf teeth iether coming in yet. so I will have her checked again next spring, when he "the dentist" is back on this side of the mountains.

Thanks for the oppinion RedReiner!

How old is she? I hope she's going to be okay.

She will be 34 Friday. She should be able to come back from this pretty good since she is young and in good shape. I just got a text pic of her in traction. While I am sure she will bounce back. I am also sure it will be a long road and is going to mean a lot of changes around here. See Michelle runs her stable / farm, has a DD with very special needs, is DW's caregiver and takes care of her cousins 6mo baby 2 days a week.

RedReiner This horse spooked at the arena door (that he is very familiar with) and then tried to bolt through it. His full brother was the same way only worse. There is a reason that 3 others have given up on him. I understand what you are saying but this horse will just blow for no reason and he doesn't retain lessons.

I will keep Michelle in my thoughs

Gorgeous photos. Also, the big bay mare of RedReiner's was beautiful too.

Your paint in her before photo, looks 100% better than the small herd down the road from me. They are walking skeletons and she continues to breed them. They are of a decent blood line too (I have been told). They get numerous calls on them (all we have to call is the Sheriff's office - and I have) but still, her yearlings looks just awful.

I have given up calling animal control for uncared for horses. I have such a large equine comunity in North kitsap, that we all tend to get together when theres need, and gently hound the owners into selling, caring for said horses, or giving them away. Ive noticed over the past two years, that most of the time, people just didnt know what all it took to properly care for their horses. So everyone gets together, and we try to help educate those who are willing to learn. I know numorous people who donate feed out of pocket, donate barn space for recouperation "sp?" ect. Our animal control here usually doesnt do much until the circumstanses are dire. So we try to not let things get that bad, as it can take years for AC to step in.
