It is lidocaine, Novacaine has not been maufactured for decades, and your lower lip should regain feeling in a hour or so..BUT, and they at the Dental office should have told you (or your Mom) that the nerve that travels from your neck around your mandible (lower jaw) comes to a tip on your chin, and in it's travels, can be entangled by the roots of teeth.
Especially in impacted 17 & 32 (the 2 lower wisdom teeth) depending on how big these teeth had become, and it sounds like they were quite large if the surgical team had to fracture them to get them out of your jaw, it is a good possiblity it will be a while before you regain all sensation.
The nerve may have been bumped or was entagled by the roots.
Some people who waite until the last minute to have these teeth removed risk having this happen.
I am not saying it WILL happen, but it can, and sometimes a numb spot remains for a few weeks.
Do not use a straw, suction will loosen the blood clot that starts the healing in the sockets and covers the exposed nerve ending.
Eat soft cool foods, hot can start the bleeding up again.
Ice Cream & jello are good.
Avoid small "seedy" type foods, as they can get trapped in the sockets.
Sesame seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, granola or poppy seeds are an example of no no "seedy thing"
Popsickles are good, but again, do not suck on anything, especially cigarettes

and straws.
You do not smake anyway, right ?
Another good idea:
Place an old bathtowel double or triple on your pillow, and use an old pillow case, incase you drool in the night, it can stain a nice set of sheets

Oh I'm sooo sorry! I had mine yanked out by the Navy 20 some years ago, there were no such things as pain killers ect, it was in bootcamp!! yikes!! , Yea straws are your friend!!! take care of yourself!!

Straws are a big NO NO when ANY teeth have been pulled, or ANY oral surgery of any kind has been done...any suction in the oral cavity draws bleeding, and cause the clots to loosen & sockets to bleed over & over.
Eventually a "dry socket" will occur, where there is no more clot due to suction, and then the nerve is exposed and the pain resulting is excruetiating and must be packed with a solution & gauze everyday by the dentist or oral surgery team.
Straws & cigarettes & hot food are BIG NO NOS.

Wanna see something absolutely hysterical running ?
Toss some bread far from a Cochin, and watch the pointed-toed ballerinas run..it is soo funny!!
Like a hippo in toe shoes, they hop real high with each step!!

We need video of that !!! Just sounds WAY TOO FUNNY !!!!.

I'll show you if you ever come over..and try to get a video, but many here have LF Cochins and know what I mean.
They hop way up in the high when they run, and so proceed slowly to the food tossed to them...too funny!

I finally got feeling in all my lip. I can still talk very well, to the dismay of my family.
the pain killer has kicked in and only the bottom right spot still hurts....
l have eaten 2 chocolate puddings and warm cambells chicken soup (just swallowed the noodles, no chewing) and mom brought me a chocolate milkshake that i also ate with a spoon.
i am supposed to keep gauze in my mouth but it is not comfortable, drying, and i tend to keep biting hard down... I am not bleeding and the stitches feel secure. as long as i work hard to not bump the stiches to keep the clots good... and in 4 days it says i will need to start irrigating the spots to keep from dry sockets...

Also there is nothing on tv.... i was ticked because there was a repeat food network show and it was the same thing i saw in december when i was laying on the couch from my tonsils out....
also WSU moved my dorm room assignment again.
My grades were posted.
Entomology A
biology 107, anthropology and plant propagation all had variations of C-,C,C+
my gpa is now 2.75 which is not too bad. i am happy with the A in entom.... plant propagation wasn't as high as I wanted. I think i tanked the final from losing all my material for studying.
Its raining here now.

It's OK, very common misconception.
For some odd reason, everyone thinks they need straws after oral surgery, and warm soup...exactly opposite.
Cold shrinks the arteries & facilitates the bleeding to stop, and hot dialates arteries.
Suction starts the bleeding, even the slightest drag on a cigarettes can loosen the clot..think Ice Cream...I have been a certified Oral Surgery Assistant for so long I cannot remember...the a CNA..I am certified in just about everything but welding...but I have CR for that!

You can take the guaze out now, and should not eat with guaze in your mouth anyways.
After you eat, and if there is still bleeding, roll some up & replace it.
You can roll some up, soak in ice water & place it back there if it is drying & sticking.

That is great news!

X 2! Here's hoping the 'cautious' part becomes an all clear with the new therapy...

Couldn't help but laugh about the rain in the hood... I was wearing my hoodie sweatshirt in the run yesterday, one of the ladies perched on my neck for a bit and left me a little present that I didn't find until later that evening...

Prompted this little poem to form in my head:

Ode to my Chickies:

Each day I come here to sit and visit.
I find your antics just exquisite.
To watch you play gives me so much pleasure.
The joy you bring me? I can’t measure.
But I do have one thing to ask:
I hope it’s not too great a task.
Before you jump up in my lap
To take your precious chicken nap,
I’d think it oooh sooo kind of you
To, um, take a second;
Lose the poo…?
