DH HATES cilantro, but usually I do grow a bit, a few big pots or planters. Not this year, though, I have 2 flats of Basil to plant very soon, as it is 10" tall in one flat, and 5" tall in the second, and will be trimmed, and harvested, and go right into the excaliber food dehydrator the day picked.

Thanks for the input!

I may have to hang onto the orpingtons until I know for sure what they are. I'd love to have hens, and they are beautiful birds, very calm. The lavender orps have much smaller combs, but it may just be because they are different birds. The Barnies are calm too, at least so far. They are supposed to be a mellow bird.

You should have seen my runs before we built the new coop! No matter how deep I'd bark them, the mud would come right through, even with the covered run. In a couple of days, the birds would be to their knees in mud! And I'd have to kneel in it to change out their food and water

The kids playground never got muddy, so we ripped out the swingset and had someone build these covered runs for us. I think the playground retaining wall keeps the water from flowing through and the ground cloth under the bark keeps the mud from seeping up. My dogs had their kennel on here for a while, and the dogs stayed clean, and bet of all, Shasta can't dig through the groundcloth! since it contained her, I knew it'd be good.

It's interesting that your Barnies are calm, since I think you and I both got our Barnies from CGG. Yours were chicks when you got them though, right? Mine was a pullet and even though I've had her for a few weeks, everytime I enter the run and the other three girls are eating snacks from my hand, she runs back and forth and back and forth trying to stay far away. For her the sky is always falling. That's why we named her (Screaming) Mimi. Poor girl. She's pretty like your Barnies though! I'm happy with CGG's birds. The light sussex is a perfect doll.

Mine used to be terrified of me, but then at 4 weeks I moved them to the empty pen next to my layer hens, they have only chickenwire separating them. Well, my hens love people! I'm not sure if it is for the snacks we bring them or the back rub they get when they squat (they have no clue what a rooster is and what he is supposed to do, I rub their backs under their wings). If they are free-ranging, there is a chicken stampede toward whomever opens the gate! The barnies see that all the hens run toward me, and pretty soon they were doing it too; not squatting, but they flock around my feet and then scatter when I reach down. Most of the barnies don't like to be picked up. A couple of the roos don't seem to mind. They fuss a bit, but don't make much of an effort to escape when I reach for them. If I take a chair in there and sit for a while, they don't mind being pet and will eat from your hand. I think once they start laying, they will be fine, like my older hens.

where do I buy the Del's? Is it at Ace Hardware? thats who has Elenbaas.

anyways, thanks for the other info, i will get Elenbaas.

Del's is at Del's Farm Supply ...

www.delsfarmsupply.com/

I prefer to shop at the REALLY locally owned feed/pet store

(Tractor Supply Company bought out the small Del's chain, a couple of years ago)

... however often Del's has bags of feed which have small tears in them, and they sell them at about a 20% discount ... while the locally owned store carries Purina, and didn't have any game bird starter when I needed some

TSC seems, at least inTumwater, to have left the people in place at Del's. But it's not like the old days when we belonged to WFA and had more input into what got stocked.

The Farm Store is even closer to you than the Yelm Del's: you're in a unique position to have a choice! I was sort of weirded out to find that Mud Bay Granary has become strictly a dog-and-cat store; when it was at the corner of Mud Bay and Kaiser it sold hippie grains and goat, rabbit, and chicken feed. I've gone poking around looking for my old cheap sources for bulk grains and they're pretty much gone. It's discouraging.

I'm wondering about feeding some sour cream to chickens, since I can buy some from my BIL; I know people feed yoghurt, I wonder if sour cream would be OK?

Been out in the run on and off all day enjoying the sun with my girls and making sure my broody Ameraucana get integrated back into the flock. She and my Marans went at it hard core as soon as I put her in the run. So I seperated the Marans for now she will free range with them later. The others just chased her a little and pecked some, but those two really don't get along when one or the other is broody!! It looked like a cock fight! The broody was really interested in the babies(teenagers actually). She was making some very interesting noises to them so I took her in with them and she seemed to like them all except the EE cockerel. I can't wait until she is done being Ms. Cranky Pants. I am not going to let her be broody again! I just didn't have the time to keep her off the nest this time. Next time she will get booted. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I got some plastic Adironak chairs and put them in the run so I could sit in there and watch them. Chicken TV is the best!!!

I am going to get some pictures tomorrow. They were all so cute dust bathing and sunning themselves!

I feel so sorry for my Orpington who was attacked by the dog, she is COVERED in pin feathers coming in. You could tell she was uncomfortable when she tried to lay down, kept shifting around. And now she doesn't like to get too far away from coop now. Hopefully she gets less skittish with time. Hope everyone enjoyed some nice weather. And let's hope for more tomorrow!

looks like primarily new people at the Yelm Del's .... some of the old standbys moved over to Yelm Farm & Pet .... I think I saw a familiar face at Sunbird too

sour cream should be fine, our chickies get yogurt sprinkled with minced garlic, at least once a week, and DH has shared some of his cottage cheese with them too ... but sour cream doesn't have the active biologicals that yogurt does (assuming you get the plain style yogurt with the active cultures in it, rather that the sweetened fruity tooty kind)

The Mudbay stores in Seattle sell chicken feed.

OK I see we have a couple new peeps in the Yakima area. So I have a question for ya. A few years ago there was a feed store I think on S 1st St. and I think near Nob hill, maybe not that far down. I think the place was called Logan's feeds. I remember they had a seperate small building that was full of chicks. I remember grandpa taking me there with him. While he was in getting feed I got to go into the other little building and look at all of the chooks. I would be surprised if this place is still there. since it has been a while. OK so maybe it has been a long time. Grandpa died in 1968.
