Thanks CR. I called the WSU Avian Lab this morning, but they are only open M-F. I am hoping someone can tell me if that's the correct place to call, AND if you have ever needed their...services...how they need the bird preserved.

Anyone else had Mareks in their flock? Does it even sound like Mareks? I have no idea how common it is in this area. They started all puffed up and lethargic, then progressively couldn't walk. I treated for cocci right away, but that didn't change anything.

I took one bird to the vet for a necropsy a week ago, and he said there were no parasites, worms, or cocci in the intestines, and that the spleen was enlarged and there was neural inflammation. I didn't want to pay another $200 for a tissue sample to be tested for Mareks, but now with 2 more dead and 2 more showing symptoms, I wish I would have.

I vaccinate.

Peppermint, are any of your birds vaccinated ?
If so, are those birds are OK ?

The Marek's vaccine is $14-$15 and costs a bit to ship as has to be kept cold.
It is super easy to give the vaccine, and you CAN give it to older birds, just watch they do not come in contact with other disease while their immunal systems are "blueprining" (busy with) the weakened live Marek's virus. (A few vets have told me so)
I use 2 Tablespoons of the Bleach SOLUTION per gallon of drinking water for older birds I have vaccinated.
And should they appear to be getting 'colds' during the immunization period, add an antibiotic as well.
The reason you vaccinate ""day old""" chicks, is that they are brooded, and not exposed to cocci, and other parasite & diseases.
If I buy an older bird unvaccinated, in isolation, the bird is vaccinated, has the @T bleach solution (to keep collibaciliosis & cocci & "colds"at bay during the 2 weeks it takes the bird's immunal system to blueprint the Marek's virus, and get back to normal.
Marek's is a viral cancer that attacks both the immunal and nueral systems.
The vaccine, which is a medical miracle, is being studied as a way to vaccinate humans against cancer.
The stories are in the WWW, can't remember the links right now, but it is a miracle vaccine.
Power seems to be OK now...

that is because th broody realizes how time sucking a kid or two is/are....you pull out a worm out of the ground - you tell yourself how wonderful thisis going to be....how should I eat it? Slow and slurpy or bit into small pieces? Then all of a sudden it is grabbed from your beak and your two teen age cockerels are playing tug-a-war with it and teasing their youngest pullet sister. My broody finally had enough at 6 weeks....she walked out of the juvenile pen, looked up at me (right in the eye)....walked over to the big girl pen, looked up at me again (and I swear)....she tells me... FOR GOD SAKE .... OPEN THE BLOODY THING....I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!

Yeah, some hens go broody constantly, some once in a while every few years, and some never.
There are those have a brood, and then never ever ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!

My power is flickering..like someone just hit a power pole or nicked the underground cable.....just long enough (half second) and back on again...still acting weird so I better close the computer down..later guys!!!!!!!

I just heard the LONGEST roll of thunder....................

The Bob cat is still about.
We are in a clearing surrounded by thick woods.
Mr Bob can circumvent around us and does so day/night, often stopping to spray a big cloud of stink...It can be breezy and the air clean & wonderful and all of a sudden a big cloud of STRONG cat pee..........Web sites say the cat will hang around 2 or 3 days unless he finds a good food source.
They have 1 main den, and usually 3 or 4 transient dens.
The main one is where they have their kittens, and hibernate.
The transient dens are along their hunting "paths"
Bobcats walk their route constantly, encirling a route up to 5 miles in distance, and claiming all territory inside as theirs.
This cat has been peeing here for as long as I can remember, having been here 1 & 1/2 years.
One time we walked out in back behind the barn, and heard the most bone chilling scream, half human, definetly a bobcat.
There is a web site that has voices & recordings of predator calls, grunts screams & habits.
RedRoosterFarms had a run in with a Bobcat last year (I think it was a BobCat) and lost half her birds...she did not have no-dig or no-climb fencing then, as I do, but she does have it now!!

The trapper is supposed to show up today, could not make it Friday or yesterday.

My docs have watched me for a hernia into the lung cavity too, but not actively.

I vegged out yesterday, not much else to do.
DH worked under the tarp on the Java Coop...I cleaned poop boards, tended birds & chicks (1 hr) and then made a chocolate GF cake and added chocolate frosting with orage zest on top (YUM!)
Then I laid around like a slug & read a novel I have been trying to read for 6 mo....
Today is haircut day!!
Got a chair in the yard, and my "tools" and DH is getting his hair, ear, eyebrows nose & moustach cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
