I don't. Dogs occasionally come onto out property and I feel they can get away easier if they can get up into a tree. I also stopped using portable mesh fences because the hens tangle in the mesh when they are scared by the dogs, making them easy pickings. Haven't had a loss since.

I really don't know reading some of the others ordeals with them was why I went with broody's

Will wait to see if the girls still want to sit on eggs after this.

I will never deal with broody hens again!
It was SOOO cute, but the end result has been chicks grown up that are flighty, freaky, scared to death of humans.
Broody-raised chicks are afraid of humans.
this is taught to them by hen.
I now have a whole generation of freaked out ameraucana that will fly right up into the ceiling every time I walk into the coop...one just broke a wing, several I have clipped wings as they are so freaked by the apperance of humans.
And the mention of the fact that they do not lay during this time...having several broody hens can really screw things up.

I plan on taking them away after they hatch

Atwood?
Are you guys related to the Atwoods up here in wenatchee? They do cherry farming.

What did she have? I'm 21 and by the time i finished reading and saw her age it made me very sad.

No relation that I know of. She had colon cancer.

oh bless her heart to have to suffer with cancer.

I haven't clipped wings so far, but the Brabanters have such big wings for their size, I may clip their wings at least until I'm sure they won't take off for parts unknown.

I've put one Brabanter pullet on Craigslist to try to make a little room in the crate until I can get a coop. Eventually, I'll probably get rid of another, but it's not obvious who that will be yet.

As you can see, her crest has a little too much Polish to it.

I was holding her earlier, when Blondie, the cockerel, gave a soft trilling sound. Everyone, including the Spitz, stopped dead and was quiet. I guess that was some kind of danger signal. It was kind of funny because the spitz went from being maniacs to statues.

What is so funny is that Hannah has been the bestest of mommas. But she had started to peck the big babies - so I knew she was getting ready to call it quits. . And she did give me the sideways head stink eye, the other morning when I brought in the fresh water for them. She look cocked headed at me, I got the hint...I opened the gate to the juvenile pen. She just marched out. I swear she took her wings and pulled up her bloomers (she is a cochin bantam) as she stomped out. She followed the fence line around to the gate to the layer run, and again (no joking) gave me the cocked-head stink-eye look. I opened the gate to the layer run and she sauntered in...daring ANYONE in the run to challenge her. She was home - watch out.

Why yes, they are trimmed in lace....what lady would be seen without it?

I don't, but I dont' have to either. My run is covered with netting and my kiddos cannot get out. I just don't want to be bothered and also, I have never been that good at doing it.

Off to make some final arrangements --- then ... back home to work on the 'tri-plex'.

Heather gave me the idea when we were talking about a coop for her. She wanted a duplex, I've adjusted those plans and will be making a 6' x 12' triplex (3 equal 6 x 4 'apartments' with removable dividers). I'll post pictures as I go
