It was SOOO cute, but the end result has been chicks grown up that are flighty, freaky, scared to death of humans.
Broody-raised chicks are afraid of humans.
this is taught to them by hen.
I now have a whole generation of freaked out ameraucana that will fly right up into the ceiling every time I walk into the coop...one just broke a wing, several I have clipped wings as they are so freaked by the apperance of humans.
And the mention of the fact that they do not lay during this time...having several broody hens can really screw things up.

I plan on taking them away after they hatch

I've put one Brabanter pullet on Craigslist to try to make a little room in the crate until I can get a coop. Eventually, I'll probably get rid of another, but it's not obvious who that will be yet.

As you can see, her crest has a little too much Polish to it.

I was holding her earlier, when Blondie, the cockerel, gave a soft trilling sound. Everyone, including the Spitz, stopped dead and was quiet. I guess that was some kind of danger signal. It was kind of funny because the spitz went from being maniacs to statues.

Off to make some final arrangements --- then ... back home to work on the 'tri-plex'.

Heather gave me the idea when we were talking about a coop for her. She wanted a duplex, I've adjusted those plans and will be making a 6' x 12' triplex (3 equal 6 x 4 'apartments' with removable dividers). I'll post pictures as I go
