Hey guys! Gonna repost this in case anybody missed it;

I've got a broody girl who would love some eggs to hatch! I can't keep any more chicks so if anyone in the Shoreline/Seattle area wants to hatch something PM me and bring em over and I'll put em under my girl hahah. All I ask is that you take the chickies when they hatch

Oh and this is her first time broody so I can't guarantee how well she'll do, but she's a silkie so I think she'll be great

The issue of commercial poultry farming is this :

Current standard is 67 sq inches per hen, that is 6" x 10"

---- This Bill that Gov Gregoire wants to see passed, will only add some space to the industry standard.

---- The initiative seeks to make commercial poultry farms go cage free.

Below is a link to some statistics about battery cages. Please be warned what you will read, WILL be DISTURBING. No pictures!

I was wondering what the current standard was, if they were HOPING for this to pass-- thank you for bringing this up, I appreciate it

I am debating going to the Chehalis poultry auction in the morning

I have never been to any poultry auction

I have a few worries

case 1: I go crazy and spend way too much and come home with way too many birds

case 2: I am horrified at what I see, and drive away cussing and crying

case 3: not horrified at what I see, get some birds and bring home some sickness to my birds

case4: again, ends with me having a great time but bringing home a herd of goats

have any of you ever been? what did you think? tips? suggestions?

dang dog....

one of my little cockerels got under her fence and she killed it, then ate it. stupid chickens...dont go in the dog pen!!!

I came home and my OH comes walking around the end of the house, I stop dead and bust out laughing...right on his heels were all 10 7 week old orps, swarming around his feet in hot pursuit like he was their momma. they were all cheeping. but then I see he is mad, he said its not funny there are only 10!!!! said he thought the dog was acting weird, whining and trying to hide. he saw what was left of the baby chicken. he was so mad.

stupid dog he says!! I actually thought he was gonna cry. dog is locked in the dog house now. not really her fault , she is never allowed out with the chickens so she just thought something fun to chase. but still... stupid dog...

One or two sips and I was so tired.......................eggz-hausticaided.
I woke up at 4 and of course it was getting quite light & birds want OUT!
Roosters crowing...
and I went right back to sleep & woke up again at 6, and then went right out to coop out.
Now I have to finish unloading feed bags, fill each coop's feed bin, and fill the broiler feed bin & mix the ground corn into it.
Meaties arrive Tuesday.
We had a mess of chicks hatch last night...and set another 34 or 35 eggs in another incubator.
It is dead still, mellow-cool and damp here...and the no-see-ums are clouded all over everywhere, millions of them!
DH & I sprayed ourselves, even the hair as the nasty biters walk through your hair & bite ya on the noggin.
I hate these bugs!
somad.gif

They will never go "away" unless we dry out.

Need dry & breezy.
They are poor flyers, so a bit of a breeze and they duck in the mud.
Right now they are so thick everywhere that you cannot walk around with your mouth open.

That is what's biting me!!!! I have all these little bug bites on my hands, neck, etc. Stupid little bugs!

I bet we get the noseeums bad this year, especially since it has been so wet. We have had rain, snow, hail, and lightning today. This is just insane. I don't like those bugs. Irritating.

I meant to say last night....but NO I did not notice she posted it this morning...I am personally still wiping the sleep from my own eyes. But, hey....its noon somewhere...right?

Awww you always make me smile, well not when you tell the sad tales from the vet office, but most of the time you keep me ROLFL !!!!!!

LOL...I am glad I could make you smile. I am of course teasing. Unfortunately, today was one of those not so good days...lots of good stuff...but 2 euthanasias...1 of which I know the old folks and their little dog. I just cried my eyes out.

I needed a pick-me-up after the afore mentioned.... and in came two standard poodle pups. Gosh they were gorgeous and they were all smiles and goofy. Beautiful dogs.

Cheers to you CL.....I tip my glass of wine to you and I hope that you enjoy your evening. Let it cool down and maybe the noseeums will leave you alone. Hey, I wonder, if you eat lots of garlic will they leave you alone?

I'll need to take a look at this when it comes up for a vote. I am all for commercial poultry having more humane conditions. I'm also looking at this section as well which makes it appear that I can't "sell" any of our eggs without a license. Selling any eggs in the future would only be to family and friends for pennies just to try and cover feed, but it could affect a few of our friends here who like to sell some of their extra eggs. Of course, I'm not really fluent in legislative documents so may have it all wrong.

"Sec. 2. RCW 69.25.050 and 1995 c 374 s 26 are each amended to read
16 as follows:
17 (1)(a) No person shall act as an egg handler or dealer without
18 first obtaining an annual license and permanent dealer's number from
19 the department((; such license shall expire on the master license
20 expiration date)).
21 (b) Application for an egg dealer license or egg dealer branch
22 license((, shall)) must be made through the master license system as
23 provided under chapter 19.02 RCW and expires on the master license
24 expiration date. The annual egg dealer license fee ((shall be)) is
25 thirty dollars and the annual egg dealer branch license fee ((shall
26 be)) is fifteen dollars. A copy of the master license ((shall)) must
27 be posted at each location where ((such)) the licensee operates.
28 ((Such)) The application ((shall)) must include the full name of the
29 applicant for the license ((and)), the location of each facility ((he))
30 the applicant intends to operate, and, if applicable, documentation of
31 compliance with section 3 or 4 of this act.
32 (2) If ((such)) an applicant is an individual, receiver, trustee,
33 firm, partnership, association or corporation, the full name of each
34 member of the firm or partnership or the names of the officers of the
35 association or corporation shall be given on the application. ((Such))
36 The application ((shall)) must further state the principal business
37 address of the applicant in the state and elsewhere and the name of a
SSB 5487.PL p. 6
1 person domiciled in this state authorized to receive and accept service
2 of summons of legal notices of all kinds for the applicant and any
3 other necessary information prescribed by the director.
4 (3) The applicant must be issued a license or renewal under this
5 section upon the approval of the application and compliance with the
6 provisions of this chapter, including the applicable ((regulations))
7 rules adopted ((hereunder)) by the department((, the applicant shall be
8 issued a license or renewal thereof))."

I *think* you need to have the egg sellers license now to sell as it is- but most backyard flock folks are under that radar becuase they sell at location (not to grocery stores) or directly to the cusomer

http://agr.wa.gov/Marketing/SmallFarm/DOCS/2-SellingEggs.pdf

so if you sell at farmers markets or out of your back yard you are fine as of right now

I am sorry to hear that your dog got one of your choockies:(
