Wow, quiet night- too many sick chicks?

I'm about ready to run away from home, or at least pitch a tent up on the hill, where at least the cows keep the grass to livable heights. The lawn mower is broken and my husband looked at me like I was crazy when I suggested we take it to be fixed while we had the truck.Yesterday I kept getting my feet tangled up in the tall grass while I was trying to work on the chicken run. And Ian jumped up and tried to stage a daring escape while we were giving him and Sylvia water. He wasn't agressive at all, and I ended up just pushing him back into the chicken tractor, but BOY is he big at eye level.

Breeding -

OK I have questions about breeding/genetics. I'm sure my questions are quite basic, so it might be best for me to start with some publications. I need to begin to understand how genes are passed, and which one are dominant etc. I'm hoping that at least one of you could point me towards a website or book that will give me the basics of breeding.

Thanks

Oh -- I have this wild idea that I need driven out of my head.

Cross breed Ameracaunas with Wyandottes. I'd love to see a bird who is marked like a Silver Laced Wyandotte but with beard and muffs and lays blue-ish eggs.

Could you feed her mush or something?

Several people make mush for feeding, and use a BIG syringe with plastic tip sut off to allow it to be pressed into the bird's throat.
You can use electrolytes, applesauce, smashed cooked or canned/smashed pumpkin with a bit of fine feed...and smashed (blended) scrambled eggs.
Molasses is good but can cause diahreah if you give too much.
Karo syrup is good, use just a dab.
Blend it all so it is liquid enough to be syringed, store in the refridge, in a container & wash out syringe each feeding.
I warm the gruel before feeding again.
Hope this helps.

Yes, they can get cocci. I am not thed one to ask for treatment advice but I am very very concerned that you are giving it warm water subcutaneously. Besides getting sterile saline or other injectable, it seems more harm than good to inject tap water into the bird. You're better bet giving it electrolytes by mouth. Could you try force feeding gatorade? Or pick up sterile saline (no additive) opth soln to inject?

Best of luck

I was unable to get sterile saline, last night, but I am hoping to get some today. The baby actually is a bit better (well sort of) this morning. I have not had the best of luck trying to force feed. I always seem to drown them. I have been "sort of" but getting some electrolyte water down her, by sitting her beak in my hand and eye dropping the fluid into my hand. I know that water is not great to do this with because it is not sterile, but I had someone have me do this before with a sick kitten - years ago - when I was unable to get saline solution.

Everyone else looks fine, they all came jumping out when I opened their pen - into their little run. I am concerned on how to treat her if she does have cocci, because she is already on medicated food.

Anyone - medicated food & Corid? Seems like too much.

She was very dehydrated.

Thank you for the help/advice. All information is appreciated.

Medicated feed should be enough for the baby IF IT WILL EAT IT>
If it will not eat feed, give Corrid by 1/2 tsp per gallon of water..only.
You can do the Corid in gatorade.
Just make sure you put the liquid way down their throat as if in the mouth it is easy to drown them.
Their opening to the lungs is right behind their pointy little tongues.
Don't give medicated feed AND corid, you will over medicate.
Good luck!!

Has full featherd shanks, toes, the scowling brow, muffs & beard..cool birds.

I got my newly hatched Barnevelder's. They were cool & sleepy so I didn't get a good picture. I have 2 really white chests & 2 grey chests, white chests seem to have darker backs almost black where as the grey chests have a lighter brown backs. So assuming 2 girls & 2 roos? No V's so I know Royce has good quality birds, already knew that as that is why I got eggs from him

Here's the picture but camera phone isn't that good without real good lighting & it was after 8pm when I got home. So I put the chicks under my broodie. She does gently peck at them when infront of her but it doesn't seem mean. She was doing a different clucking last night to them. I tucked them under & this morning they were still under there. I pulled one out to see if it wanted to eat but it didn't. Broodie lifted up a little & I pushed the chick back under. I hope Broodie knows when to let them come out to eat & drink? This is Broodie's first time going broody as she's not quite a yr old. I have her blocked off into her own nest & the old roost area has the food & water.
