How big is your colt now? I LOVE working with babies! Ground work is my "thing" when it comes to training horses. Saddle training is up to my Sister and Cousin. We tend to work as a team. lol
We call Nickers a Quarter pony. She's just so little standing next to Prada and Lacy. Tiny compared to red. Ive had her here for about 3 wees now, and she has come a LONG way so far. She WAS terrified of men, was extremely over reactive to presure on the poll, would rear, stomp, kick, and generally be a turd. Her back feet were about 4" longer in the toe then is correct. You couldnt pick up her bac feet without having her try to nock your head off. We wern't able to lead her without a fight... And totally unsocialised with people. Now anyone can pick up all four feet, lead her without any issue, she actually prefers men over women, but is in general an in your pocket kinda pony. Her feet are looing SO much better now as well! She's coming along nicely, and IF she keeps progressing as quily as she has been,
Should be under saddle come late summer.
Prada on the other hand is a complete dream! She is almost ready to go under saddle. I think 2-3 more weeks on the ground, and she will be ready to except a light rider. I will not ride her until she is over 3 yeadrs old, as I am a larger rider and she is still a filly. Plus I need to tae some riding lessons. lol Im o putting around in our field, but Im not comfortable enough to ride the trails unless Im riding my cousins packer. lol I know Gracie will take care of me. That and I would like to particapate more out at Silver Spurs, and was ased to try out next year for the Thunderbird benefit Rodeo drill team. So Im guessing Im gonna be pretty busy this summer.
omg I will take some pics of waylon tomorrow...he is just over 2 months old and he can look me in the eye. his back is elbow height already. he is going to be a big strappin colt. he does have some attitude. shakes his head in irritation when pressure on the halter. but he does give and is starting to walk with me. I left a drag line on him today so he can step on his rope and get used to the pressure, he can be irritated and flip his head all he wants when he steps on the rope lol eventually he will figure it out.
When it comes to that, I like to have some sort of bungy between the lead line and the halter. That way, when they pull, it is softer pressure, and will teach them to give to a lighter pressure. Rather than having just the rope, that will gaive a hard jerking pressure on the halter. This has always worked wonders for me. I do almost the same thing when teaching them to stand tied. Prada was bad at standing tied without pulling... Too and old tube from a bicycle tire, looped it through the tie ring on my trailer, and then let her sit tied to the bungy on the trailer. She no longer rears, gives to the slightest bit of pressure, and almost stands quietly. lol I say almost because she will pace while tied. Prada also will lounge by hand signal alone, or voice, with or without a whip. At least for me anyway, she doesnt respect my sister like she does me.
This K button is driving me nutty... Im constatly going back and fixing words...
