Hmmm, we do the deep littler and it doesn't smell much. However, this is our third year; first year we either didn't do it right 'cus it did smell, OR it needs time to ferment properly. It needs to be not too wet and not too dry. Also, the base needs to be able to drain, so that it won't stay too moist.
What kind of litter are you using? That could have something to do with it.
I started with wood shavings but that was dusty. Now I have just straw.
I use wood pellets -- very very happy with the result.
Well, we were busy this weekend. Dh and son got the wire and the roof on the run. We put the vinyl flooring down in the coop today and built a roost. I think it is ready for occupants! Woohoo!
I keep trying to upload pics, but it keeps telling me they must be JPEG files. They ARE, dang it!

I can't find that recipe. The online search tool isn't very good.
My mom's version of the book was from the 40's I think. Of course I cannot find the original right now. I do have like 20 copies stashed, so I won't lose it. It was more like a trifle.
I do have it in a word doc. So I copied & pasted.
Mix together cranberries, banana, and sugar. Set aside while you prepare rest of recipe. Place ½ nilla wafers in bottom of 16x16 dish. Cream butter and powdered sugar add eggs and beat well. Spread over the crumbs. Now top with the cranberry mixture. Sprinkle with nuts. Spread whipped cream over top. Sprinkle with remaining nillas. Chill at least 4 hours. Best flavor if chilled overnight.
