Ahh, I see... Well as it stands right now, I know a couple with young children who are in the middle of a move from downtown Seattle to Fircrest, just a few minutes away from me. I've been told that a coop needs to be built before the chicks can come and live with them and since Whitey is taking such good care of them at the moment, I told them they had at least 4 or 5 weeks. So, provided they are able to get the coop done in good time, the chicks are promised to them. However, if for some reason they find the task too overwhelming so soon after their move, I'd like to have a back up plan for them! I won't know for at least a month or so though...

And I was hoping I might get one.

Most of the chicks will be available - we may keep a couple pullets if anything (no room for anything else in our henhouse). will be back later this week - dh & kids are taking good care of our broody. This is her second time this year and is committed - only coming off the nest once a day.

eta - due to hatch on the 17th.

Something tried to get into my birdseed bucket last night right under my bedroom window and I did not even hear it. I have a 5 gallon laundry detergent bucket full of birdseed that I have not opened since May when I heard the neighbors were having issues with bears. It sat in a corner partially hidden by potted plants (well weeds as I never filled my pots this year). This morning I noticed the bucket was rolled halfway across the patio, and when I flipped it upright, there are holes chewed around the lid, but the lid is still on and I don't think the critter got anything. I suspect it was a raccoon, this is right where my cat vanished the other week, and again my bedroom window was open and I did not hear a thing. The pots have been scooted and tipped so the critter could move the bucketout out of the corner. I hate raccoons.

FaceBook Fan Page for Iowa Blue Chickens

Thanks for the link. Great photos of neat looking birds!

Hmmmm... there's been at least one "Which Breed or Gender" post lately where what I now see was probably an Iowa Blue dismissed as a mutt.

I started hanging out in that thread to learn more about what breeds of chickens people have, but now it's sort of like watching America's Funniest Home Videos; people will post out-of-focus photos of day-old mixed chicks and ask that they be identified for breed and gender, for instance. Or start their answers with "I don't know anything about chickens..." and then label a group of pale red, white tail-feathered hens as "Road Island Reds."
