I was getting smoke from somewhere this morning when the wind was blowing 15mph out of the north Really big fires smudge up everywhere; I'll never forget watching the smoke from the Chelan complex spill over the passes in- was it 1995? We were in San Francisco eleven years ago when there was a big fire east of Sacramento that spilled smoke down the river and out in to the Bay, weirdest thing to see from the air.

That fire above Sacramento (2008? or 2007?) was burning very close to my brothers home in Foresthill along the American River Canyon. He was not too affected by the smoke, though the fire got uncomfortably near. He is a California Hwy Patrol officer and got some awesome photos of the fire while patrolling the closed roads. It was my sister and her family in Lincoln, just bellow Auburn on the edge of the Sacramento Valley that got most of the smoke. It was soo thick that they had to drive with their lights on, and no one was allowed out doors. It was so dark in the daytime she said she could not even see to the end of her block, and she lives on a short block! We ended up taking her kids up here for 3 weeks just so they could get some outdoor time. My little nephew who already has severe asthma was having a difficult time breathing and he was up here for a few days before it no longer sounded like he was struggling gor each breath. Sadly their 98 year old great-grandpa who lived nearby passed away the first week they were here. He went to the hospital with breathing difficulties and developed pneumonia which he never recovered from. The doctors would not blame the smoke and said he died due to his body shutting down from his age! B.S. Just a few weeks earlier he was staying with my sister while his daughter (whom he usually lived with) was on vacation. He went for long walks along the Lincoln Slough by himself every day while he stayed there. (He was a strong, old Norweigan Farmer who had lived most of his life in North Dakota. They moved from the family farm in the 1980's. It's way out in the middle of nowhere somewhere near the Canadian border - never could sell it so it still sits there abandoned).

It may sell now with the oil rush that is going on up there.

Well, here's hoping but they made it very clear to me yesterday that, when you pay for overnight shipping on live birds, that means they are guaranteed to be there in 3 days. If they get there today, they'll figure they've done their job. They will no longer check on flights like they used to, they just tell you, "Be here by 3:45 pm and they'll be there the next day." Not true, of course. That's why they changed to a 3 day guarantee. Typical government run program: let's not do it better, let's just make it so we're off the hook for incompetence. The animal rights group are no help: they think we're the cruel ones for mailing an animal- let alone owning them in the first place which is also not on their agenda. The Post Office has wanted to stop carrying lives for years. Lobbying by farm groups and hatcheries has kept them shipping. I won't be surprised if some day the PO goes under and then we have no way to ship birds except someone driving them there. Maybe some day we'll look back on the old PO with nostalgia.... The good news is that tracking now shows them in Rhode Island, so they're getting a lot closer.

I hate the USPS. A few years back I mailed a package with $4,000 in collectable playing cards in it to Spain FULLY INSURED. Someone read the customs sheet, opened the pacakage and stole the cards, and delivered a tampered package to the buyer who did not accept the package because it did not look as I had described. He asked customs in Spain to open the package while he looked on and a bunch of garbage cards had been put in the box. I called the USPS, it took 2 months for them to get the package back, and when it arrived, a postal worker took it to my door. The package was very different from the one I had sent! I had already filed a claim and did not want my finger prints on it, so I told her to send it to their inspectors as evidence. I tried to get the USPS to pay on the insurance for 2 years paying likely hundreds in phone calls over that time. I think they hire the rudest people they can find to work customer service, and put you on hold while they eat their lunch and go out to run some errands. I hired a lawyer who contacted them as well only to find that you can't sue the post-office while a claim is open (nearly $500 lost to the lawyer!). They waited 2 years and then denied the claim initially because the theft likey happened in Spain and they have no control over what happens in Spain (would be nice if they let you know when you ship something overseas that their darn insurance is only good until the airplane leaves US soils, and later they wrote in their report that they denied the claim because I refused the retuned package so it is possible that the correct items were mailed to me and then were switched from the package while it sat in their "unclaimed mail" warehouse! So I guess if they won't even insure that their own workers won't steal, then their insurance is no good at all no matter where the items are stolen!

I sure hope your birds meet a much better outcome, and soon!

Hmm...not all true.

Folks like to plant their comfort foods, but it also depends on what are in the stores.
There are lots of "interesting" home grown foods out there.

Trouble is ... home grown foods stay at home and not shared in the farmers markets.
So they are growing it, you just not seeing it. LOL And they is not sharing.

Folks also grow their old timers because they know it works in their garden and they can always buy the more interesting varieties in the stores.
Garden size is the determining factor in most cases. If you just have a teeny plot, you dont want to put "untested" varieties in it.
Just got to look in the right places and you'll see some cool things growing in backyards.
I started a pea patch in Redmond and there were lots of expats. 70%+ were from another country. You should see the variety of plants there!
I tried white eggplants this year...Cool plant, no fruit. I also tried ichiban japanese eggplants...loads of fruit.

I know for a fact in the central part of seattle, you will see lots of very interesting foods grown in the pea patches. Some of those seeds are saved and passed from neighbour to neighbour.
I saw a paw paw plant in Bellevue, PUR-simmons, walnuts, asian pears & dates, etc & in Beacon Hill, its just that if we grow "interesting" fruits...we risk not harvesting due to our climate zone.
I never harvested my "failed" persimmons, giant pumpkins, grapes...the list goes on and on. I try new things, but I also have a big lot to plant in.
Also, some plants are just not available. I have been trying to get a nice chestnut tree for a while ... w/o having to pay too much for shipping.
Raintree is very good, but prices add up fast.

TRY AS YOU WILL still not gonna convince me there is anything better than SPUDS n GRAVY and meat. ok Come on this is where you are suppoda chime in CL !!!!

Not trying to convince you to be like me. Why? Difference is the spice of life.

FYI I have also just sent my letter to USPS re cmsdvm's shipment of birds. I do have to say that I am somewhat dissappointed that nobody else has seemed to SPEAK UP about this. Come on folks WE THE PEOPLE must stick together.

I have one other request. If you believe please say prayer's for a very special friend. I am not at liberty to discuss but request that you please keep this wonderful person in your prayers. Sincerely Rob

The one I saw was earlier: I haven't flown anywhere since 2000. Upon reconsideration, it was '99 when we flew to SF because the first night we were there my husband flew to LA for his 25th high school reunion dinner.

It's funny where smoke goes: last summer (2010) we spent a weekend with friends at their family cabin on the south shore of Lake Chelan. The days were clear and hot but both nights there would be a tide of smoke crawl down the lake from a fire in BC somewhere around the headwaters of the Skagit. It was pretty strange to watch, because it was a full moon and the front of the smoke was illuminated by moonrise and then the moon stained red.

I can't find the date of the upcoming Stevenson show on their site. I see the PDF download for last spring's show, but apparently I'm blind to anything listing the date for the fall show. What are the dates? I really enjoyed the one in the spring.
