I had to put together a "quick" warmer coop for my seramas. They had been living in a more open A frame style (roof and roost). Used old hay bales I got from a friend, packed them around one of the little "coops" I had bought. They are all nice and toasty...now to teach them to go there instead of the "open" one. They will stay much warmer until I decide their permanent winter coopo. Of course, I may just tie this one up a bit more and make it the winter coop...add a light and I bet they will be good. The BIG coop blocks the North wind, this would probably work nicely. Now.....I have to reinsulate the big coop. A bit of advice...unless every hole is sealed...don't use fiberglass insulation. Mine was totally ruined by mice. It was so infuriating. Won a $50 gift certificate from work for Home Depot...it is going into the "chicken pot" for insulating the coop and sealing it up ..... properly. Start on this this weekend. Anyone want to help.....

come on over.

Anyway, RFF, I do believe Fall is here. BRRRRR!!!!!!

Okay, I have 14 Lav Orp eggs in the incubator, along with 6 serama eggs. My little hen all of a sudden decided to lay some eggs. I am eggcited for one late batch. The seramas were such a hit at the fair.

You're not as high up or windy as we are....but you're pretty brave with those around here!

I tried D'Uccles once (before my coop was fully insulated).....but they did have a 250 watt heat lamp. They didn't fair very well.

You're still incubating?? I have a broody mille fleur cochin hen....she's determined to sit on something so I put a few eggs under her.....

Lav Orps huh?

So am I the only one who got "we're not in Kansas anymore" winds yesterday?

I'm seriously thinking, that storm was 2 months early, as we normally never get those kind of winds until November.

oh we got "equinoctical" winds here yesterday, the yard is littered with stray oak branches and clumps of leaves; the run nearly collapsed (DH went and tied things up and down, partway through) -- I heard another series of gusts come through after we went to bed last night (I was calling it a williwaw but stopped to check my terminology; a williwaw is a cold burst down from the mountains; this was a relatively warm wind coming apparently from the south or southeast)

takes a pretty strong gust or sustained wind to get the oak TRUNKS swaying --- Quercus garryana for those into botany -- but these old trees were dancing the cha cha for sure

Stumpfarmer could tell you how old these oaks are, since she knows people who've lived in Yelm "forever" -- my guess would be at least a couple hundred years old

one of ours is surrounded by wild rose and Oregon grape; the other by snowberry and Indian plum; the chickens love to scratch under both, they feel protected from the aerial predators screaming over by the fringe of fir trees off the north side of the property and down the steep bank (about a hundred feet below) to the power canal

I've let the property pretty much exist as nature seeds it, only pulling up the Scotch broom and whacking at the blackberries, since neighbors who plant non-natives, curse the deer who come and eat all their ornamentals

I have a lot of broken tomato limbs and a lot of the plants have been knocked over. They are in 5 gallon buckets. I am glad I built a strong run for the chickens (the coop is an insulated shed with a poured cement foundation).

What a cutie! I don't have a lot of experience with Great Danes, although I've liked the ones I've seen. I do remember years ago when I was about 16 spending the night at someone's beach place and sleeping on the couch in a sleeping bag. They had a Great Dane and sometime during the night he came and jumped up on top of my legs so we visited for awhile, but every time I made like I wanted him to get off of me he growled a bit. I didn't get very much sleep that night.

You were sleeping on HIS couch. The least you could do was share it!
