I got some pretty bad winds, but way after dark. When I heard the frist big gust I realized that I had not reminded DS to close up the coops. Sure enough, I went out there and they were open! My Barnie Eglu is in a group of trees, I was a bit nervous out there with all the branches flying around!

Nah, it's just a matter of someone in the (logger, construction worker) family getting time to do it. I wouldn't want anyone who I don't know to take this on; if it's not a family member it's going to be someone with their own insurance, because this is a dangerous thing to take on.

Thanks for the offer, but I have plenty of expertise to draw on in my gene pool.

You are happy to give the Darwin Award to someone in your own family rather than someone else's. How nice of you.

Anyway, anyone I would offer, has their own insurance.

Good to know- just that the family is full of pros. And your generous impulses are appreciated.

No no! I'm raising LOTS of Olive Eggers, got two full incubators, half of which are OE's and still gonna fill em once they empty. . .

I'm eating some tonight because they're my current source of chicken-food. I raise chickens primarily for the joy of them as well as preserving rare or good quality birds, the Olive Eggers I breed for a dual purpose kinda thing though. My Araucana x Marans make the best meat hybrid yet so far (besides my Sussex x Shamo which are very limited) so what I do is hatch out a whole bunch, raise them, sell the pullets since they're a good interest in buyers, and keep all the boys to butcher for food for us and our dogs.

I don't mention OE's in the signature because I rarely sell their hatching eggs, and the pullets I sell to locals, plus they're not really something you "breed" like one would, say, a Marans.

And past that, it is pointless to advertise here since no one lives nearby me who's on BYC.

My Olive Eggers I always choose to be Araucana based instead of Ameraucana based, and they always turn out excellent, grow fast, and get very nice and meaty, especially in the breast, which the credit mainly goes to the Araucana for. Sometimes I do sell the boys for breeding though because some of my boys end up absolutely beautiful. My last boy was a Black Breasted Red, and was rumpless. Was a huge fella! He's now enjoying some time on another person's mini-farm.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. That was interesting too!

Well, went to the vet to weigh the pumpkin, and it is 66.9 pounds!
Alot lighter than it looks!
So it will spend the next few weeks at a Pub where locals can guess the weight & whoever is closest wins something.
My neighbor owns the pub (and also drives the school bus!) and she loves doing contests like this.
So, just planted the last 3-20 foot rows, of winter garden, a big experiment.
1 row of Flashy Trout's back lettuce (Strawberry Cabbage Lettuce, the heirloom name)
Danish Ballhead cabbage (about 10 in the row)
Red Cabbage (about 8 in the row)
and the final row is Black seeded simpson, a pack of seeds I found from 2010 that I forgot I had, so we'll see if they grow.
The rest is planted:
beets (cylindrica)
Brussels Sprouts
Radishes
broccoli.

Illia: Did I send you any of the "Fast break" cantalopes?
If not, you gotta try them next year!!
They climb well, too, a bonus in the green house.
I had/have 5-10 melons per vine the size of softballs...VERY sweet and honey-like fragrant.awesome.
I grew them in my greenhouse in a tub as an after thought as Dad got the seed....Going to plant them again next year for sure but I could not remember if I sent those to you or not? Or any of the pumpkins?

I sent a bunch of seed to Rainwolf, too..so cannot remember who got what.
OK, I am off to make myself some oatmeal bread~~
Fishing tomorrow.
Apple Jelly on Thursday.
Last batch of apple butter was canned at 5 AM this morning...I have apple butter coming outta my ears!!

Getting an early B'day present on Thursday! Hubby is taking me down to Corvallis to get me some Welsh Harlequin ducks From Holderreads Waterfowl Farm. (And the birthday isn't until November - guess he felt like I ought to get something after he got the new rabbit last week)

Let me know how you like them (or if you end up with an extra pair)....MIL wants something because Muscovies for her pond (she calls them "herpes" ducks).

Yes, I know what you mean about Muscovies and the horrible caruncles on the males (we have about 45) I just wanted something a bit more reliable with the egg laying, and also a lighter meat (Muscovy is very dark and rich, delicious though!)

I don't think I'll get more than a trio, they are $20 each - so going to try breeding instead - cheaper! (and we have the incubator space)

Talk about luck (not sure if its Bad or Good) Last week I found a Australorp that talks TOO loud in my driveway
woot.gif
and today when I drove into the driveway TWO six month old speckled sussex followed me in. I'm sure they were lost because they seem frighten
idunno.gif
So I put an add in the lost & found of the New York Times. Sure hope the Owners call
idunno.gif
. The right thing to do would be to keep them until their owners claim them. Right????
