This is required by law, and is the reason I have a job. I work for a company that writes computer software for the health care industry. The FedRegs are very difficult to adhere to as they are a constantly moving target.
We had thunder & lightning from about 1am until about 4am this morning....luckily, there was rain and it was pretty cold out...I just kept thinking about fires.
I'm heading out to feed/water everything before the rain storm comes in--it's getting black up over the Loup.

Don't ya have elec fence somewhere for other critters like horses that you could just tap into.
Yeah...but I'd have to run it quite a ways...and figure out how to drive around/over/under it....but at this point it would be worth it to see him bite down on a hot wire!
You can see in these pics how far away the fence is (you can see the horse shelter in the background):
My coop does not have electricity in it but at the pole next to the round pen so I run an extension cord from there and into the coop.
You'll need to get a pet electric fence. A horse electric fence is more powerful & could hurt a dog. We ran hotwire around our coop. Now our chickens run around the yard with the dogs, no problems. My dogs do love scraps even if they have already had their dinner, they are never full. I haven't had to have my hotwire on for a long time. Did have to turn it on when my mom's Aussie was over & broke out of the front yard to the back yard. Had a baby chick down playing with it like a squeak toy. Got him in the house while I rounded up my chickens & locked them in the coop. I turned on the hotwire...he has huge respect of hotwire when he got zapped by a lhama fence. So our wire was set at a level for our small dogs, Jack Russell & 14 inch sheltie. So the Aussie was still dancing around the coop, I had to be mean & push his nose down to it. Wow did he scream, jump high in the air & raced to the glass door trying to climb through the door. I think he got the hint not to hurt or play with my chickens lol.
