Chickielady -
They are, but the decision isn't mine, and the female I would agree to sell or give away. She really isn't the brightest. The best way to describe her is wild or reptilian in thought. Most of her actions are selfish and instinctual, few if none are really influenced by emotion and consideration for any other animal or even for her own sake. She has no respect for the male, no respect for us except when she's in the living room and wants to bury her head in our laps which is adorable, but otherwise, she's pretty much an eat/sleep/get what I want kind of dog. She doesn't understand punishment, or listening to commands, or simple obiedience, she can't even look you straight in the eye, and is pretty much "scattered."
We've been in conversation with a local Boerboel breeder outside Sequim and it seems we aren't alone, however, our case is semi-special, in that one in every handful of Boerboels is like her.
The male is just not as tall as he should be, no where near, and he's not as sociable as the female. He's pretty much to himself, very
male in behavior. He wags his tail a lot but the most you get out of him is a look, maybe a brush, then he's doing his own thing. We got Boerboels for their supposed very attached, personable temperament.
But like said, the decision isn't mine, as the dogs aren't mine. Personally I wouldn't have gotten them in the first place
- The breeder never had videos and few photos if only one per dog, plus they're from Africa and trust there is low, and then there's the fact that Boerboels are indeed known to be a very personable dog, but half the people do say they are like our female.
And then let's not forget the fact that the female arrived emaciated, the male arrived with parvo and both had serious worms.
I love the dogs but I don't think it is worth it for us to continue with them. They're not improving, and they're expensive to keep. They are indeed beautiful and awesome to look at though.
