Yes, the fake eggs work well! I also use straw or hay as nest box material--I have found they lay in the boxes better if it's something different than what I use on the floor (the floor has shavings)....

It's 43 degrees and pouring rain.

I never did get sand for the two newest runs and those are about 4" deep in mud/poop. Sighs...I have to wait until DH comes home (which reminds me, he is doing concession stand for FBLA tonight and won't be home until 10pm--so I'll have to ask MIL to come over & watch Audrey while I feed/water)...to move some chickens around and won't be able to get sand until Monday.

The only thing I have right now that's sproutable whole seeds is BSO, which I can't handle or breathe the dust because of a recently acquired allergy I'm trying not to make worse. Sprouting seeds are relatively cheap compared to the fraction of the diet they'll comprise, so that's less a concern than having to go to the food co-op to get them and my husband buying ten kinds of kefir, or something.

Thanks for the hint about grapefruit extract- is that the essential oil or a tincture?

I'd love to go- for one thing, I want to look at all the Bantams and see who might have eggs, chicks or started trios available next spring (I'm looking closely at a few breeds in Mille Fleur, Porcelaine, Blue, Blue Red, or Crele colors but am more likely to make a good choice by looking at birds and talking to breeders in person than reading everything I can find and looking at pictures). But I am short of money, time, and the ability to sit in a car right now, especially the last two.
