In my prayers....but do know...that if it is diabetes...it is controllable. I have a 15 yo pom who has been on insulin for over a year. She is still kicking and even puts the younger dogs in their place occasionaly. But, we did have to start her on pills (enalapril and furosemide) for congestive heart failure. This will put more stress on her kidneys and does start to "number" her remaining days. We may have another year with her...but probably less.

But if you can get the diabetes under control and find the right dose...it is doable. Prayers are with you.

The Omak river has lots of bald eagles in the trees, they swoop down and get the fish. Also around the dump site for road kill has some Golden Eagles around it every year. they are huge. And gorgeous.

I wish....I'm off work until November 1st (was supposed to be December 6th) but we can't afford to live without me getting paid for that long.

So I'm having to go back November 1st. I would not be able to justify going to a show when we're barely scraping by and I'm selling about 1/2 of my breeder flocks to pay for diapers.

Is MiL going to babysit for you?
That would be such a comfort to have Audrey with relations so close by instead of with strangers in a daycare with lots of other kids with GERMS!!

Well....supposedly January 1st, I'll be back at full-time (instead of working four, nine-hour days). When that happens, my MIL will have her on Mondays (her day off). A neighbor of ours with two (grown) children will be baby-sitting.

I am just letting you all know that the night crew has been here tonight. DH got home from Canada tonight, and he is going to be home all next week. That means I am going to have to cook dinner all week long. Uf Da!!!!
barnie.gif
I suppose it will be okay though, because I don't mind eating dinner. When I am alone, I just seem to forage. I think I am a fairly good cook, but I clearly don't know the recipe for small. I think it has to do with when I learned to cook, I was cooking for 9 people.

I will add that the egg production is down at my house. I have 17 hens and I am only getting about 6 eggs a week right now. I think I am going to supplement some Vitamin D into their diet. I know that I feel better when I take it. I was doing a quick clean on the coop this afternoon, and I located a stash of eggs. My BC Marans hen has started to lay, and she made herself a little nest in a corner of the coop. I hope she does't get mad at me for cleaning out the corner.

And I just thought that I would pass on greetings from Larry the very scary hummingbird. He buzzed me good at least twice today. I don't know why he was mad at me for, because I just refilled his feeder's. I just wish that the little cranky bird would migrate south for awhile this winter.

Okay that was it. I am going to bed early tonight.

What was is that you said once? Something about how he expects something like three meals a day? He must be insane.
That's going to be my problem someday. I don't know how to cook small, either.

That bird has issues and that's all there is to it.

I love that 3 AM is your early.

I would take a look at Municipal Bonds. They are just as liquid as cash, but pays much much better interest than any savings account.

good morning everyone

it's been a busy week at work and I feel as if I've missed a lot. Since insomnia woke me early (again) I think I'm finally caught up!

RFF - I love the video your DH made. Adorable!

Illia - your Araucanas are beautiful!

As far as chicken prices...in my opinion and from my CL experience the cost of pullets should range from $10-15 and laying hens from $20-25 (at least here in the city.) I think $15 for friends or large quantity purchases of layers is fair. Feed is expensive (especially organic feed,) coops are expensive, incubators and/or losing eggs from a broody hen is expensive, etc. In no way did my last batch of chicks pay for themselves - from the cost of the hatching eggs (no roosters allowed in the city!) to feeding all the cockerels and then not being able to keep them long enough to eat them, to buying eggs from the store because we no longer produce enough, etc. Fun - but no way to run a business.

Anyway, on a lighter note, I have a cute story my DH told me from yesterday. DH went into the yard because Juno (mommy) and Henrietta (auntie) were making frantic noises and running in circles. No chickies anywhere. So DH started getting concerned and he started checking all the fence lines to make sure there are no holes, etc. There weren't any, so he started looking in other corners & hiding places around the yard, no sign at all of the chicks. There are a LOT of hiding places - but seven chicks is a lot to not see any sign! Several minutes later, a chick runs out from under our porch with a bug, squealing the "I HAVE FOOD AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT" squeal with six chickies chasing it
smile.png
My DH just rebuilt the porch and he had forgotten we left the access beneath open on purpose because the pullets and smaller hens love it down there. However Juno doesn't fit being a Giant Jersey

And Henrietta - well - she is my " special " Henrietta. She fits under the porch, probably just got caught up in the moment

And I will have to post a picture of...our molting broody. Yep - not the best timing...thank goodness she doesn't look like the naked chicken on the molting thread! I asked my son yesterday, 'How do you think Juno looks?' He said 'skinnier'. And she does look about 1/2 her size...she has lost weight and feathers. And when I give her scrambled eggs & mealworms & other high protein items, she does not eat but gives it to her chicks. I know she'll be fine as long as she doesn't lose too many feathers, but I'm thinking I may have to try to seperate her for a short time to feed her daily if she loses too much more weight. That's assuming she'll forget about her chicks long enough to stop freaking out and eat...honestly not likely.

Ooh - it's almost light - time to let the chickens out! Hope everyone has a fun Saturday!
