Use a cotton ball, and spray it with the bleach solution.
Solution:
2 cups household bleach in an empty clean milk jug, LABEL it with a sharpie pen.
Fill with water.
Dump into an empty spray bottle & use for all sorts of clean ups: toilets, counters 9especially after cutting up meat) dish drainers, dish washers or what ever.
Dab the spot every so often.
Alcohol on a cotton ball also works, but burns and takes a bit longer to kill off.

Then hydrogen peroxide should work too? Basically anything that kills germs without killing the host? The vet had me use Captan on the dogs. I had mixed success with it. I don't think that it's recommend by any source as safe for humans.

my experience? hydrogen peroxide doesn't seem to affect fungus ... at least not the fungi that affect the humans around here (we've tried it)

I pour a dollop down the sinks now and then, since it does affect many bacteria, and the heat and oxygen it generates, tends to break up whatever gunk is sitting in the P traps and overflow drains -- by the time the peroxide gets to the septic tank, it has given up its additional oxygen and reverted to plain H2O

oxygen doesn't seem to poison fungi the way it poisons many bacteria -- so it's a germicide but not a fungicide

Too bad you didn't discover it yesterday. I could have brought down the Blu-kote.

Or I could borrow some from Margo, especially if she needs to come use my washing machine. Paul was here for a couple of hours yesterday looking for parts.

This just reminded me that I had asked my dad how they got rid of ring worm, before modern drugs. He said that they used Gentian Violet. The last time I tried to buy some it had become very expensive. It used to be one of the cheapest things to have on hand. One should research Gentian Violet before using. I am recalling that there may have been a problem with the original formula, of course that would be the one that really works.

Blu-Kote must be the same thing. Both products will stain everything purple. My poor dear Floozy is still purple from when the dogs loved her up early this spring. The dogs tore out the feathers on her back. I thought that all the girls had made it back into the run, but Miss Floozy must have not heard the call. Anyway she is fine after being Blu-Kote'd. She is just still purple.

So the point is I tried Gentian Violet on the puppies with mixed results.

one more thing to think about: you may not want to swab yourself with alcohol ... but one way I've found (don't laugh !) is to spray myself with eau de cologne ...

alcohol does seem to burn my skin more intensely; I will even get a reddened and sore area from applying standard medical-use alcohol to UNBROKEN skin

I've found that a solution marketed as ST-37 (Hexylresorcinol) does an excellent job of killing skin bacteria, and it doesn't sting me (I take it with me to doctors' offices, had them use it also when I got my ears pierced)

however, a significant number of people have an allergic reaction to this, which is why it's not commonly used in medical offices (it's sold as an oral antiseptic)

and, probably, alcohol is cheaper ...

I hadn't tried HP on any of the fungus episode yet. I do use HP as a mouth wash, when I get canker sores in my mouth. Get canker like sores every time I have dental work done. I am gone to pour some HP down my garbage disposal. It grinds fine, but the drain part seems to run slow. It could be that I may just need to replace the thing. I don't use it nearly as often since getting the chickens. But every once in a while I will find something in the back of the refrigerator that is to scary for the girls.

Bleach is light sensitive? There's something else interesting I didn't know. This place is a wealth of information, facts and opinions. One of these days I'm going to get around to making some of CL's suggested bleach solution. I actually bought the bleach, but just don't have an empty gallon jug around here. Something simple like that will stop me.

The ratio is equal to 1/4 cup bleach in a pint of water, or 2 tablespoons in a cup.

I mix this up for use when cleaning up puppy puddles. I had bought a spendy bottle of bleach cleaner by Arm and Hammer. When I couldn't remember where I bought the stuff, I started to mix it myself and can keep recycling the bottle. I also have been known to clean the floors with a stronger solution. That means down on the hands and knees. That is a lot of work given that the whole house has laminate floors. If we replace the floors again I am thinking that concrete will be the way to go. I would go with slate, but I think that I would be safer on a smooth floor.

I am sure I have extra antifungal ointments -- late DH, current DH, and DS all have used them, for this that and the other ...

if either of us needs to make a trip Oly/Lacey-wards, could drop some by (but it's not on the schedule yet)

I got ringworm from kittens, years ago, and I think it was treated with blue vitriol ... UGLY, but it worked ... of course this is ancient history now

be very cautious about the tea tree oil; my friends on the rosacea list have been warned that there are some effects on the hormone system from anything other than very brief usage of that; some rosacea is at least partially due to demodex mite overgrowth, and tea tree oil is sort of the last resort when nothing else works

(my ocular rosacea is pretty well under control since I started using zinc-based dandruff shampoo to wash my face (eyes firmly shut) in the shower, every few days)

I'd suggest trying a dandruff shampoo with coal tar in it for that ringworm ... T-gel comes to mind as the brand ... Neutrogena ?? --- I had the best luck getting rid of fungus with something called Super-Tah ointment, however that seems to be available now, only in Canada ... though Tim's Pharmacy in Yelm said they would make it up for me, since they are a compounding pharmacy, not just a pill-dispensing one

Yeah, that's another one of the things- coal tar shampoo- that I need to replace; my shopping time is so limited lately that stuff that gets left off the list takes a while to replace.
